Best bet right now is to keep working on solid state lithium batteries and push their storage capacity up as much as possible, while creating a system that lets you rapidly swap in fresh ones in the field. SSL has the advantage that it actually keeps working even if a hole is shot into it, and with the potential to cram more power in with more complex and attuned internal battery chemistry using things like nanotech and graphene, I think we might be able to get an exoskeleton that can run on full power for at least 3-4 hours per battery, which is not ideal but i think is actually useful in a well run modern army.

these suits are going to be bulky as shit at first and essentially a mechanical solution to the problem of crew served weapons. yes its a problem.

those big M-60's you see Rambo hipfiring in the movies are actually operated by 2-3 guys.
one gunner, one guy on a T&E, and one guy hopping in ammo/changing barrels. if we could mount infantry weapons like that onto just one guy, who was mechanically stabilized by computers, and oh, lets slap armor on him to make him nigh immune to small arms. well then shit son, thats a GG.

Get little yellowcake paks, store them in the suit, and use them to charge the engine lazily (as needed) and power things like strength, speed, jumping, or flying. Line the interior of the suit with material you'd find in an NBC or Hazmat suit. Line the engine like you would a nuclear reactor. This protects the user. Then use solar to power the lightweight stuff like interface and hud on the monitor.
