As someone who makes finance software used by some banks and other financial instituions, debt is literally negative numbers.
In some systems we use two different measures. We keep 'what you have had' and 'what you have owed' separate but whenever we want to know how much an account has it is literally 'what you have had' - 'what you had owed' and if you owe more than you have then negative numbers will and are stored as the total value of the account.
