because the college drop out/transfer rates for those majors are already usually greater than 50%.
We don't need to scare off even more people from what might be one of the only useful things to learn in college.
cram those 101 courses with 100+ kids and by the time calc 1 is over you'll have narrowed the field down to the ones who stand a chance at graduating STEM.

I think there is a nice overlap between those that would be dissuaded by such a proclamation and the ones that would drop out, with the lack of it. The sooner you get disillusioned the better, because you can then actually attend preparatory courses or get the fuck out before the whole ordeal starts.
