What does /sci/ think about Matrix-style VR? Is it impossible? If it is possible when do you think it'll be available for commercial use? I just wanna sniff girl's feet and butts in it.

Matrix-style VR is only possible in virtual reality.
>>8451061
With enough computation power, I dont see any reason to suggest that it wouldn't be physically possible
>>8451163
Do you think around 2060 would be a safe bet for it to be made available to people?

>Do you think around 2060 would be a safe bet for it to be made available to people?
Nah, during that period there will be another major economic depression. I would say around 2080.

The future, friends
You best believe our top scientists are being paid very well to research this exact problem.
I like to think that crude versions will be available by 2050. Already we have experiments inducing hallucinations via other senses.

I think the further we delve into schizophrenia, the closer we will get to a sort of selectable, recreational hallucination, which is the essence of full-sensory VR.

Do you think it will be the type of VR where we can create a sandbox and just do whatever we want and be whatever we want? This topic interests me.
>>8451200
Probably.
It'd be a great training tool, recreational, behavioral rehabilitation tool, among many other things.
>>8451200
Sure, not only a sandbox, but a sandbox inside a sandbox - if you understand what that is supposed to imply.
I think it will be available around 2060.

The guy you replied to hours ago here,
Nope, way earlier. We are closing in on making a "genuine" artificial intelligence and provided we don't get offed by it, it will accelerate technological progress even more than moore's law.
>>8451200
Eventually, yes.
The first versions will be like fully-immersive movies with limited interaction. Then multiple storylines, leading to greater and greater customization.
I always like the version from Strange Days, in which it was based on recorded experiences, which seem like they would be the start, eventually leaving to full-on Matrix style VR.

I can't wait to see how fast Even Moore's law is.

Could it continue like this? What does the science says?
I have a creeping suspicion that this there is only a single unique poster in this thread.
>>8451475
Why? Because everyone is mostly positive about it?
I personally think it will be much earlier, if you look at Ray Kurzweil's projections let's say somewhere around 2030.

>Ray Kurzweil's
you ruse me
>>8451530
Ray is a intelligent man. I will say that, but I think he's off by 10 years.
>>8451599
Ray may be intelligent, but he is also alarming far up his own ass, and garners way more attention than is warranted.
He has more in common with a Jehova's Witness, with his irrational belief that the Singularity will somehow solve the world's problems.
Don't get me wrong, I think futurism is a worthwhile pursuit, but Ray is entirely the wrong face for it.
