The point of high school is to get students ready for college and in college you get nothing but LECTURES and LABS. If you want to change public education, change colleges first.

Standardized education WORKS if the children have a father and a mother who work with them each night and supply a safe stable home environment.

Instead of blaming the school, blame the parents for not giving the child a home environment that supports educations.

How to improve the public school system

>Vast majority of teachers and management are fired (the money is moved to making college free)
>Students learn through computerized teachers
>Computerized "Aristotle" that teaches people everything, using sites like Khan Academy for example
>A matching system is used that pairs students within a classroom that would best help each other. They are assigned an assignment of some sort that teaches teamwork and cooperation while also strengthening the core skills involved.

Unlike teachers, a computer works perfectly and is capable of learning to improve. A computer will fit the sensibilities of its student, and will learn how to teach them in the best way possible. As close as possible to an Aristotle and Socrates relationship.
Since everyone is learning at maximum efficiency and effectiveness, everyone will master the core curriculum even faster.
This means high school graduation age can be reduced significantly, down to 15 or 16.
College becomes cheap to free, and the entire country becomes educated as FUCK.
No more retards becoming teachers and torturing every student that has to take the misfortune of being taught by them.

Humanity is saved

Prove me wrong
>>
>>8448176

>a computer works perfectly

You assume students WANT to learn. The first generation right off the boat WILL want to learn and will study all day.

The third generation inner city welfare child, just wants to get high and fuck. All the free high quality education in the world will NOT make a difference because the child does not care to be educated. Let the child "lean at his own pace" and the kid will use the computer to look at porn and play music videos.

We do NOT need more athletes, or musicians, or actors, or artists, or dancers, we do need more mathematicians, engineers, chemist and physicists .

Liberals ares are fine, BUT only for the extremely gifted in that field. There are WAY too many musicians, when only a few are really any good. We 100% do NOT need more actors!!!
>>
>>8448207
>You assume students WANT to learn
The only reason someone wouldn't want to learn is because the person teaching them is a retard.
Computers aren't retards. I said it clearly:
Computers will fit the sensibilities of the student.
>>
>>8448211
>The only reason someone wouldn't want to learn is because the person teaching them is a retard.

Then every public library in the inner cities should be filled with eager young kids studying the vast store of knowledge contained in them.

>The point of high school is to get students ready for college

>this is what people actually believe

top kek son. High School is a glorified day care facility for teenagers. college level material isn't hard until you get into junior year and any mildly intelligent kid can/should be doing community college by age 15.

high school is literally wasting 2-3 years of your academic life on bullshit. the only relevant counter argument to this is the socialization you get in HS.

At best you might get some low tier people to answer the question days latter on the internet which never works as well as talking with someone face to face. Also what about labs for classes like biology and chemistry?

Ask anyone who has taken an online class, you never learn nearly as much as in person.
>>
>>8448258
>Yeah sounds great except you forget the entire purpose of a teacher which is to ask questions to which generally cannot be found out otherwise
I honestly feel like a majority of teachers forget this important point as well. Many of them are similar to police officers, they have some authority so they abuse the shit out of it and forget what their real job is: to help the students.

>Ask anyone who has taken an online class, you never learn nearly as much as in person.
I've learned more on my own taking an online class than I do from a retarded teacher. Retarded teachers can actually end up making you dumber, if they are retarded enough. For example, I'm getting A's in all my advanced physics and math classes/labs. Meanwhile I'm getting a B in my stat class because the teacher taught us the wrong procedure and it ended up fucking with my exam grade. Granted, I should have studied through the book on my own, and I take full responsibility for my fuck up, but I'm still utterly shocked that this man is getting my fucking money to teach me incorrect material. And he has the audacity to call himself a mathematician.

School is one of those things where you kind of get out what you get in

If you view it as "indoctrination" and a "test of obedience" and so on, no shit you're not gonna get anything out of it because you're coming in with a predisposition against it and aren't gonna try very hard.

That said, a reformation to be more like Germany's system with apprenticeships and so on would probably be better. But I can see that that also might force people down certain paths that are difficult to leave later in your life.
>>
>>8448350
>School is one of those things where you kind of get out what you get in
Okay, so how will paying teachers more make kids want to put in more effort? In fact, how will shortening school and giving less opportunity to practice the material makes kids want to put in more effort? It seems like these "solutions" only make it easier for kids to put less in. It would probably end up hurting those kids that are putting their all into school too. I never said anything about tests of obedience or anything of that sort, I don't know why you brought that up.

>>
>>8448197
Segregation. Put the talented students together to make a good learning environment. Not much you can do for the rest.
>>
>>8448966
The problem is that it's next to impossible to have any objective metric to judge young (elementary/early middle school aged) kids as being talented vs. those that are not talented because people just age differently in that group. It's not really fair to a kid who blooms late to punish him for shit at like age 8
>>
>>8448967
>punish
what
>it's not fair
How is giving kids a curriculum crafted to their aptitude any more unfair than the alternative? Hamstringing skilled students is fair?
> it's next to impossible to have any objective metric
It's easy as piss, just go on their results. Doesn't matter what they can do in 5 or 10 years. If they can learn at a more rapid pace at the moment, then of course the material to do so should be offered to them.
>>
>>8448971
Idk how recently you went to school but what you're suggesting is already in place and it doesn't work well

In my area it's called the GATE program
>>
School is nothing more than a kindergarten for teenagers
>>
>>8448974
Glad to hear you fellas have it.
>>
>>8448974
If you have any experience with, or knowledge of, the system and its failings I'd be very interested in hearing it since ability grouping is fucking illegal over here.
>>
>>8448981
The main criticism I've seen is that it's largely based on how good your test scores are at a young age

There is some statistical basis to say generally speaking kids from wealthier backgrounds do better than poorer kids on standardized tests, at least at young ages

Thus basically each school district's GATE program is giving special teachers and other benefits to basically a bunch of rich kids
>>
>>8448983
And I would say herein lies the overall issue in the US: poorer parents generally speaking are going to not develop their kids well in the important first few kids of the child's life at least compared to a general wealthy family kid

This leads to disparities that carry on into adult life. It sounds elitist as hell but I can still see it in my physics program at uni, you talk to some kids and you can just tell that they came from a poor family by how they talk and think about problems. I think the importance of those first few years in the development of a kid are understated
>>
>>8448289
I seriously fucking hate progressives.

Literally the laughing stock of anthropology majors.
>>
>>8448986
I don't think that's true, because of how heredity of IQ changes with age. Sure you can expect some difference in knowledge owing to the time one's spent with quality education, but that's something that should vastly diminish with time.

And I don't see how the proportion of rich kids to poor ones is a problem. Gifted people are a very limited resource, and should be cultivated to be exploited as best possible.
>>
>>8448371
Increasing wages would attract more teachers which would increase competition in the field, schools could pick more good teachers and get rid some bad teachers. In theory.
>>
>>8449035
Partially correct, the problem is that many mainly minority schools want teachers that are also minority. They would rather have a large number of bad minority teachers than a large number of great non-minority teachers. Blame liberals for this.
>>

Pic related is how you actually fix it.

As for his video, if high school is so difficult for him then why not make a black-only school that pushes kids into blue collar work?
>>
>>8449158
Yeah that and fucking unions stop schools from getting rid of the bad ones. The system is put in place because it seems more "fair" but it's actually only fair to the teachers that aren't doing their jobs correctly, the ones that deserve to be fired. It's the same situation as >>8448967. The "good" kids are not being allowed to excel because the system wants to be fair to the "bad" kids. The only reason this system is still in place is because the good kids can cope with these setbacks and don't let it stop them from succeeding, whereas the bad kids just bitch and moan for more support. We think it's better for everyone because the ones that it's worse for still end up better off than the ones it's better for.
>>
>>8449374
Yes, but you are missing the point... they do not CARE if the teacher is good or bad as long as they of the the "correct" race. Many liberals firmly believe that a child seeing a teacher of the same race is MORE important for their development then having a good teacher of another race.
>>
>>8448185
You cant live a day without any art medium being in your life though. Try driving a car without any music or not having a tv.
>>
>>8449453
I do not have a tv, and my radio is broken in my car. Claiming art is unimportant is denying an aspect of human expression. What we make, what we think is a form of art.

But claiming that the advancement of humanity has gained more from music, dance, and acting than scientific progress is stupid. If we had rocks we would draw in the dirt and bang them together, but getting better at doing those is tangential to human advancement not a precursor to it. Venice wasn't a place of art and then power it was a moneyed place that attracted artists. Art has always been a symptom of agency and human expression.

I laughed at that part because in Finland majority of the points he mentioned in the video still stand. Especially in primary school where teachers (at least 15 years ago) use literal army tier discipline to keep order. Same commands as well.

At least in higher education things are changing quite frequently and in college some courses' lessons are streamed over the interned and the videos saved so you can study at your own pace whenever you want.

Another neat feature would be the EXAM system where you can reserve a spot in a classroom and complete a course exam there whenever you want. Real useful on courses with hundreds of attendants where it would be really difficult to gather us all in one spot at the same time. Also no need for human interaction at all since everything is automated.

>>
>>8447317
The importance of culture and science should be considered heavily, as they do help one another in different ways.

The system might need some adjustments, but on a deeper level, the consideration for changing the school's way might need to be more scrutinized for the reason of the education in the first place.

To be honest, it's really tough to see certain perspectives as a young adult. But you may not even get the chance to consider things more deeply if you've never been exposed.

The solution to the problem might not be in the video, but the question the man raises should be considered from a new angle as technology improves and societies change.

This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. You'd sacrifice the sustainability of an entire classroom just to root out the one or two exceptionally intelligent students and let the others rot?

Will you be teaching them Plato by Grade 5? The Tempest in Grade 7? Do you know how many students you would alienate by Grade 3? This poster has absolutely no grasp of child psychology; it's literally a curriculum designed by a soulless robot.

Yeah, look and you now. You're smart. You like math and history and science. Were you like that when you were in 4th grade? Did the prospect of learning Conic Sections thrill you when you were just 13? Fuck no, dude. All you cared about was digging around in the dirt and finding cool sticks to hit your friends with.

Elementary school and Middle school children literally cannot entertain some of the values you're trying to impose on them at this point; and the ones that can are genetically rare and "naturally gifted".

Hell, half of the High school aged children, from year 9 to 10, won't understand what you're trying to tell them. These are literally 14 and 15 year olds. Most teenage boys at that age can't even feel empathy-- their brains literally have not developed past the point of allowing them to feel empathy. Trying to make them care about the history of music and find joy in pre-modern art is as foolish as hoping your infant child can feed themselves by time they've grown 3 months old. After all, all they have to do is put food in their mouths and eat it, right? Anyone can do that!

Damn, dude. This is literally a case of "let kids be kids". Sure, raise the standards a little bit; American children are so prone to inactivity and laziness that they could stand to receive a bit more rigority in their daily lives, but don't force this bullshit on them and expect them to make it out okay.

You want them to turn out like the kids in China? Or Korea? American Engineers SHIT on the Chinese.

>You only have one chance to switch over to the fast lane meme
>It's impossible to reach the same destination if you not in the fast lane meme
>It's so unfair if one kid (who wants to) learns more meme

These are such silly arguments. If a kid blooms late, then he should enter a late-start gifted program. Why hold back the early bloomers? If the kid never enters the gifted program, he should just catch up later in a community college.

ex
>A kid who starts the gifted program in the 1st grade gets up to measure theory in the 12th grade
>A kid who starts the gifted program in the 4th grade gets up to topology in the 12th grade
>A kid who starts the gifted program in the 7th grade gets up to linear algebra in the 12th grade
>A kid who starts the gifted program in the 9th grade gets up to ODEs in the 12th grade
>A kid who starts the gifted program in the 11th grade gets up to single variable calculus in the 12th grade
>And a kid who never enters the gifted program gets up to precalculus in the 12th grade (just like now).

At all stages, the gifted program is a benefit. The only thing holding this back is that teachers would have to work harder which they absolutely hate.

The unfortunate truth is the kind of people who support this kind of message probably wouldn't even flourish in the system that they're proposing. People think that having the "right kind" of classroom will magicly make all the students into over acheivers and scientists. But most high school students would drop math class if they were allowed to freely, and that shouldn't happen. The whole fucking point of school is to make you do shit you don't want to do because otherwise you'll just grow up to be an uneducated dumbass.

I know a guy who dropped out of a prestigious high school and got his GED in his senior year because he wanted to prove how pointless a diploma was and how he "knew how the system worked". He thought he was going to college.

He has AIDS, a heroin problem and cleans up animal shit at a shelter now.

>The unfortunate truth is the kind of people who support this kind of message probably wouldn't even flourish in the system that they're proposing. People think that having the "right kind" of classroom will magicly make all the students into over acheivers and scientists.

But the video isn't proposing a "right" classroom it's proposing a "custom" curriculum base on the individual. Which is why the prescription medicine argument was brought up in the first place.

No one has made an attempt to even argue against the core concept in this thread which shows that the video's premise (at least in relation to the thread) has merit due to the fact everyone is attacking everything but the custom curriculum part.

Seriously no one has brought up one good reason why we shouldn't have a curriculum based on an individual by individual bases.

>>
>>8454223

Exactly. The only part of a student's educational career that could really Be affected by a 'custom' curriculum would be grades 4-6 and grades 10-12. High school students already offer some electives, but in the case of elementary schoolers, it would be incredibly unreasonable to expect them to already know which direction they want their education to be going. Luckily, I figured it out early, but most kids dont really know themselves enough to make that kind of life decision until age 16 or so. There simply wouldn't be enough teachers to offer such a diverse set of electives a to any grade level.

If students are really enthusiastic about learning a specific subject then they can learn it themselves. There's no reason your education has to be given to you by your school, and there is definitely no reason it should take a whole year to learn algebra, stats, or calculus. If anything, schools slow down your education. Not because of standardization, but because they insist on teaching it so damn slowly.

If you don't like school then just teach yourself if you want to learn something so damn much.
>>
>>8454298

This. The concept that an education has to be provided by a school system is preposterous.

Don't know if it's in this video, but a lot of the time when people complain about the school system, they complain that no one teaches them how to do things like how to pay taxes, how to pay rent, how to cash a check, how to vote, things like that. Those are some of the simplest things, you could literally find out how to do them in 5 minutes on google. That kind of instruction doesn't belong in school because it doesn't require any kind of thought whatsoever, it doesn't develop critical thinking, it doesn't teach you how to work with others.

Because you would need a dedicated teacher per student to pull that off or radically reduce the amount of time the student learns for.

Individual education could work in early elementary school (grades 1~4) where kids learn less than 15 minutes of material a day (compared to home school kids). Beyond that you have to have group education.
