No. He never gave a shit about Tesla. He only hired him once to work on DC current, then Tesla came up with the AC current and sold it to another businessman named George Westington. So Edison's real rival during the War of Currents was Westington, not Tesla.

The only reason power lines are AC is because of existing infrastructure
For all the memes about Tesla, basically the most important thing he did was the design of the induction motor (which was pretty important), and for that he got a unit named after him which is more than Edison got.

A more important reason why most powerlines are AC is that it's a lot easier to work with. If you want AC at a lower voltage than the powerline, it's easy: use a transformer. If you want DC at a lower voltage (without wasting a lot of power) you need much more complicated and expensive equipment.
