Alright, so my second semester of uni is coming up. Calculus

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Alright, so my second semester of uni is coming up. Calculus 3 was a breeze, and my advisor told me to take Linear Algebra next.

When I asked her if I'd be able to instead take Differential Equations first, she flipped shit and told me that that isn't even possible.

The fuck? Is it?

>not doing Calc 3 and Matrix Algebra at the same time

You fucked up nigger.

>The fuck? Is it?

Some schools merge Matrix Algebra into ODEs and others don't. If you're desperate then you could ask do them at the same time and study a bit ahead to eigenvectors.
>>
It is weird that she said you can't differential equations. A lot of people at my uni take that after Calc III.

linear algebra is a stupidly powerful tool for solving DEs, so I don't know why you would want to learn DE without it

OTOH, my sophomore DE class didn't have a single formal LA-based approach and was instead focused on solving stupidly easy things in the quickest way possible without learning any of the theory, so, it really didn't matter whether or not we had taken LA.

You need linear algebra for solving linear ODEs of degree n and systems of ODEs, plus some for linearization of nonlinear ODEs. There's also Laplace transform but they taught that at the end of the course for some reason
>>
>>8435134
I took diffeq before lin alg, no problem
>>
I guess it depends on the book. My school used DiPrima, so the linear algebra wasn't necessary. We stopped before the chapter on systems and whatever after. Your school might be different. Either that or your advisor doesn't know what she's talking about.
>>
Eigenshit problems are pretty important. Usually an ODE class will teach you what you need to know to do calculations, but the theory taught in Linear Algebra will make it much more intuitive.
>>
>>8435134
Nuke Eng here i never took linear algebra and passed diff eq with an A
>>
you need linear algebra for solving some systems of linear equations, and for wronskians but its not like you learn those yourself
>>
>>8435409
engineers are plebs tho...
>>
>>8435134
FWIW I'm a junior physics student and 3 of my 4 classes this semester draw HEAVILY upon properties of linear vector spaces, linear operators, and eigenvalue problems
>>
I'm taking D.E. at the same time as L.A., and if you have basic methods and properties at hand, it will not be so hard. Just the basic structure of vector spaces, diagonalizastion and eigen values, linear independence and ortogonalisation. Pretty easy stuff.
>>
>>8435134
Higher order ordinary linear differential equations need to be converted to systems of differential equations, so the methods of linear algebra are required. http://tutorial.math.lamar.edu/Classes/DE/SystemsDE.aspx

advice threads do not belong on /sci/ per the sticky, you mongoloid piece of shit

the board needs more active moderation
>>
>>8435134
If you're going to a non-shit uni, that is true.
>>
>>8435658
They don't NEED to be converted, that's just one possible way of solving them.
>>
>>8435134
Physicsfag here, diff EQs is kindof bad. Just wait until you take specialist-physics math. I'm taking it now, (its called math physics) and holy nigger is this on a completely separate level. Emag was easier.
>>
>>8435134
Why don't you just follow the fucking curriculum, you know, in order?
What is your major and situation anyway? You shouldn't have to talk to your advisor about taking basic, mandatory courses such as Linear Algebra, you should just follow them.
>>
>>8436248
OP here. The school I plan on transferring to won't transfer an LA credit, but it WILL transfer a DiffEq credit. Guess I should just take LA anyways.
>>
>>8435974
Calm the fuck down. I'll be more careful about that, anon.
>>
I took diffeq without ever taking linear algebra. Im not a math major.
>>
You need some linear algebra to differential equations.
>>
>>8436302
As long as you can add, subtract, multiply, divide and work with coefficients with matricies, there is no reason to take linear before diffeq
>>
>>8435134
You should've taken LA and Calc 3 together. But I doubt youl'dd have much trouble doing DE and La together if you study LA ahead.
>>
i always called them hyperbolic pringloids
>>
>>8435134
I would recommend LA first. It may not be needed for everything but it's a huge help. And if you will be doing any computer simulations and calculations it's fucking awesome. So you may not need it for dif E, but what follows you will really want it.
