Computer Modern is hands down pretty fucking ugly. We all got used to it and don't care any longer, but it's still ugly. Unfortunately, fonts in LaTeX are a huge pain in the ass and viable alternatives are very rare. I usually just go with Palatino, it's the best looking and most complete alternative probably.
