Budget of ESA : 5 764 millions $

What's the combined GDP of the 22 member states?
>>
This reminds me of that probe India sent to the moon. A million news articles on how it was the lowest cost for a probe to the moon and how India might revolutionize space which has been dominated by high costs projects from NASA.
>it fails
Articles about the failure. Very little.
>>
I'm almost convinced that the US have a secret laser satellite around mars that they use to blow up everyone elses landers and rovers, just for the claim of sovereignty.
>>
>>8423984

It achieved almost everything it was intended to

And then India sent a probe to mars on the cheap and that one is going fine

"lands" it failed to deploy it's harpoons and somehow managed to land in the worst spot possible. And why is this even a thread? I thought space travel wasn't supposed to be limited by biases down here. Can we stop with this dick measuring contest for christ sake and actually do something productive?
>>
>>8424044
Because the US actually has a dick. EU, and everyone else are pussies.
>>

Its just trolling. And it did land and achieved everything it was intended to achieve

the only way that we can make progress in space is with intense nationalistic competition. this is just how the system works.

Nah, we needed that early on to get the foundations built, now its all about cooperation

United, we are the biggest economy in the world but the disparities in Europe are very large. Basically, France, Germany and UK are the 3 giants and far behind Italy and Spain and even further behind the rest.

Contributions to ESA, France and Germany represent 1/3 of the budget, then comes Italy and the UK and then the rest contributes symbolically.
>>
>>8423997
Or, mars battle rovers. Space war would be as entertaining as those fighting robots tv shows.

>>
>>8424077

But you aren't united in any legitimate sense that justifies adding all the economies together and pretending like you are in remotely the same tier as single countries like the US or China. You are living a fantasy.
>>
>>8424099
EU has twice americas population and is generally more socialist, so social costs are much higher
>>
>>8424128
EU currently is fairly similar in structure to early United States, aka several independant nations cooperating together, for the most part
>>
>>8424151

you mean the pre-Constitution United States. The US moved away from the Articles of Confederation to avoid all the problems the EU has (namely, conflicts-of-interest developing between individual member states and larger states bullying smaller ones)
>>
>>8424173
No, the post-revolution US, When each state was still essentially an independant nation acting mostly in its own interest. The only significant difference was that the US has its own army and the EU doesnt
>>
>>8424182

We are talking about the same thing: originally the US was exactly as you said underneath the Articles of Confederation. It did not work so the US Constitution and US Bill of Rights was ratified in 1788.

I know this may upset some if I say that but compared to Europe, the states in the USA have no history. Some of Europeans countries have over 3,000 years of history, some 2000 years or 1500 years of history. The EU was born out of the most important war that humanity has ever known and it was only 70 years ago.

This is already really amazing that we managed to unite dozens of countries which have a long history and who make war for hundreds of years. And we managed to do it in 70 years.

Imagine if the US, Canada, Mexico, Cuba, Brazil, Chile and Peru + 15 others, not allied but united to form one entity with a single currency and common laws.
>>
>>8424182
>>8424189
The US is still a bunch of nations working under 1 umbrella. That's why Texas always threatens to leave it at the drop of a hat.
>>
>>8424189
>>8424182
>>8424173
>>8424151
Which will never happen because countries are rushing to LEAVE it
>>
>>8424235
>the states in the USA have no history.

As someone who is part native american, fuck you.
>>
>>8424235

The European Theater is just that: European. Outside of Europe nobody really cares about it. Same for WW1. Take note of all the big budget items the DoD spends money on: aircraft carriers, carrier-borne aircraft (including VTOLs) and missiles. Things that make a huge difference in naval conflicts (ie, the Pacific Theater) but are not as useful on land (where traditional artillery and tanks retain a major advantage).

>Imagine if the US, Canada, Mexico, Cuba, Brazil, Chile and Peru + 15 others, not allied but united to form one entity with a single currency and common laws.

The US has been integrated with the entire new world since we claimed it following the Spanish-American war in 1898. This is why we keep intervening in their affairs, and why they keep coming here.

The point being is that europeans really need to get over themselves if they want the EU to survive, ultimately the things that divide europe are mostly pettty cultural things.
>>
>>8424236
>The US is still a bunch of nations working under 1 umbrella
Nah, now its a centralized state. Civil war ended any genuine independence of the states. Texans like to talk about secession but they cant physically or legally do it
>>
>>8424281
A central authority cannot grow in power and influence indefinitely though, none in history ever has.

Remember that once upon a time you would have had to pay tribute and sovereignty to some cunt living in Rome or Istanbul or Karakorum or London even if was 3,000 miles away from you, and now none of those guys rule anything 300 miles away from them
>>
>>8424287
>A central authority cannot grow in power and influence indefinitely though, none in history ever has.
So? What does that have to do with anything
>>
>>8424289
"Texas" or "California" or even fucking Delaware are all potentially more permanent entities than "The United States" is

When the United States dissolves it will be very sudden, like the Soviet Union before it. People won't know for sure until even a month before it happens.
>>
>>8424292
Well, there are no signs at all of that happening soon, state identity is the weakest it has ever been while national identity is strong

Like I said, there wouldn't be. People were heralding the strength of the USSR in 1989.

>state identity is the weakest it has ever been
Not going to argue with you there

>while national identity is strong
Definitely going to argue with you there. The youngest generation never gives a shit in any given era, but ours doesn't give a shit in record numbers. There's a million competing identities. What does "being an American" even mean at this point? It doesn't mean freedom of speech, freedom of religion, etc., the majority don't give a shit about that, even people who pretend to.

>>
>>8423984
It failed? What are you talking about?

They are still collecting data with it after two years. Anyway, the primary objective for India was to demonstrate its capability in achieving interplanetary spaceflight. As far as I know, India has a followup mission in 2018 or 2019, and a moon lander mission in 2018.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_missions_to_Mars
>Mars Orbiter Mission
>Operational

Looks like the mission is going so well that it has been extended.
>>
>>8424910
Wrong mission. He was talking about this one

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chandrayaan-1
>>
>>8424911
Wow, that was a fast reply...

If he was talking about Chandrayaan then it matters even less, because Chandrayaan mission was India's first ever attempt at a probe to another body. They had achieved orbital insertion and were able to collect a sizeable part of the mission data.

From the wiki article that you've linked:
>Chandrayaan operated for 312 days as opposed to the intended two years but the mission achieved 95% of its planned objectives.[2][16][17][18] Among its many achievements, the greatest achievement was the discovery of the widespread presence of water molecules in the lunar soil.[19][20]
>>
I didnt hear anything before the mission about this orbiter it was all about the lander. Now they are saying the mission was a success because the lander wasnt the main part of it and it was only the orbiter they really care about. Just admit failure jesus christ.
>>
>>8423828

Well it looks like it worked perfectly up until either the rockets fired to early or to short. An important part of the mission was to retrieve the telemetry from the descent and they got that.

But holy shit ESA, why do you find it so difficult to build landers that work? It's the third failed landing in a row. Even the NASA can do it, why can't them?

What is the point of putting people in LEO or even in space in general? It's absolutely worthless, we should just be spamming probes everywhere instead.

although, colonization would be good, but you're right, probes/rovers are better right now

The us after the 1930 crash and particularly after ww2 was VERY socialistic (google maynard keynes)

the state invested had an iron fist control over the economy via investmetns and welfare, it made pretty sure everyone had a decent job , this is what's known as the american dream, widespread aplication of communist measures.

In particular the moon landings are teh workings of ultra centralized communist way of decision making even worse than russia ever did
