Why do normal people have their brains turn off when confronted by math above arithmetic?

The same reason people have their brains turn off when confronted by computer problem.

If you ever go to work in a job that isn't full of STEM Majors take a good look to the person to the left or right of you and the chances are that they can't do multiplication or long division.
>>
>>8423485
I'm pretty good at maths but I'm awful at arithmetic.

^These. It's an adaptive strategy people have to save time and effort by classifying problems as something they will think about or something they won't think about. For a lot of people, higher level maths are something they won't think about, so when they identify that's what the problem is they'll immediately stop trying to engage it. I see the same thing at work with non-programmers when I try to explain how something even only loosely involving code works. As soon as they realize they're approaching a programming topic they immediately decide to stop trying to understand any of it.

On the one hand it's kind of annoying when people do this to a topic you personally do understand, but on the other hand, I don't think it would be very healthy to never have this sort of behavior. Otherwise you'd be literally autistic and constantly overwhelmed by all the little irrelevant details most of us have learned to ignore.
>>
Replace math with other things and I guarantee that every single person does this with a whole lot of stuff.

Why not just re-wire headphones after an earbud dead? Why not google how to fix a broken internet connection instead of calling someone? (using 4g) Why not just learn everything you need instead of ever asking for help ever?

Obviously I'm exaggerating a bit but
>>8425186
is correct, its a time saving thing. It might not be hard to learn something new but it's a hell of a lot easier to call someone who already knows it, especially when you've convinced yourself that something is very difficult.
>>
>>8423485
>above arithmetic
You overestimate normal people.

>>8425186
Fucking useful idiots like this keep the economy going.

"Just give me the credit card with 25% APR I'll pay it off by working harder"

>>8423485
u so smart
>>
>>8424342
As a college student I've worked in a storage and can confirm there are people who can't multiply small natural numbers in their mind. One guy couldn't add 2 digit numbers. He had to draw strokes on a piece of paper and then count them.
>>
>>8425564
>Why not just learn everything you need instead of ever asking for help ever?
tfw this is the reason why I'm so unsuccessful in life
>>
>>8426747
>treating economy as some magical thing out there
This is exactly what economy is about. Instead of doing it yourself it's more efficient on the grand scale to delegate it to someone who knows his stuff.
Ever wondered why very poor economies are full of know it all versatile DIY people?
>>
>>8423485
All humans are different and are specialized in different subjects. One may be good at politics another at math.

You don't need be a mathematician to figure this shit out.

>implying OP made this thread because he genuinely wonders about this and doesn't just want to tickle his ego

Because civilization necessitates division and specialization of labor, and there's no need for a normie to do math when you can do it for them.

What????
No.
"Outsourcing is a practice used by different companies to reduce costs by transferring portions of work to outside suppliers rather than completing it internally. Outsourcing is an effective cost-saving strategy when used properly."
Lets say someone wants to fix their computer to work. But he wants to go to a concert.
He can
A) call someone to have it fixed and use some of his limited income and not go to the concert.
-repairman = win
-worker = lose
-concert = lose

B)
He reads up on it and fixes it himself.
(Assuming he has a normal work routine like 8 hrs work, 8hrs sleep, and 8 hrs sleep for example)
-worker =win
-repair man = lose
-concert = win

Unless he cant do it himself (too comlex) or doesn't have the time he shouldn't outsource.

>pic unrelated
>>
>>8423485
Area of a circle is pi*r^2 not 2*pi*r^2.
>>
because of symbolic representations for non-lingual information
>>
hmm... why would most 'turn off' when shown symbolic pictograms of which they've never had first a visual explanation of which to relate it's relevance....
really makes one wonder, what a hard question...

lets answer with another question, why is it that after making a connection, we tend to assume everyone else already has?
>>
>>8423485
Why why why..

Maybe you should look into psychology for your answer if you dont discount it as not scientific enough. I wonder why you dont know this if you are so special.
>>
>>8427353
Holy shit, my math teacher did exactly the same routine as in your pic
>"happy parabola is like a smile because it's leading coefficient is POSITIVE"
>proceeds to show how a happy parabola looks like with her arms
>"sad parabola is sad because it's leading coefficient is NEGATIVE"
>proceeds to show how a sad parabola looks like with her arms
>>
>>8427353
That depends greatly on your income - if you're a poorfag, your time in not very valuable, so it might be a good idea for you to DIY. But if you earn decent money it's almost always more efficient to stay e.g. 2 hours overtime and delegate it to someone who will do it in a fraction of the time it would take you to do it. The money you'd earn in the meantime almost always exceeds what you'd save on DIY.
I have seen plenty of skillful DIY people. Heck, I'm one of them to some extent. Sadly, our hobby is almost never economically justifiable (maybe except sometimes for the skills we learn).

Delegating very simple things that could be done in minutes would obviously be not economical. But the trend leans the other way most of the people - they take things onto themselves which should be delegated.
>>
>>8427353
>>8427749
btw. the example I've shown before of countries so poor they have to depend on DIY is a classic example of a recession.
>>
>>8423485
Anon we are apes meant to use our critical thinking skills to formulate good hunting strategies not arithmetic, arithmetic is the most alien thing to animal minds we simply dont have brains built for that to do efficiently.
>>
>>8427776
This not what research shows. Many animals can easily differentiate between larger and smaller amounts.
>>
>>8427781
Yes but they cant really make an abstract term for those differences anon, things like algebra and calculus are not meant for our shitty ape brains.
>>
>>8426999
That's obviously what he was referring to, tripsucker.
>>
For a well functioning society based on the best method of organisation, specialisation (evolutionarily selected), it is nessecary to assign all tasks to specialised individuals suited to complete the task most efficiently, however current society is inefficient with the false idea of austerity managing to sever the connection between supply and demand when it doesn't suit the elite, we could be in the position to remove most of the necessities burdened on existence, free to live in a society where everyone has the time to learn whatever they want, but it'll probably take a few more cycles to reach utopia, hopefully the planet holds out

But they are
I think he meant "humans are not necessarily the same." The muddled meanings is an unfortunate artifact of language.
lojban /sci/ when?

>>8426786
Same.

Why didn't anyone ever tell me that being a jack of all trades really just means you're a 5 of all trades.
