Seriously retarded question coming in. Be warned.
How would I foil this using the first outer inner last method to achieve the result x^3-x^2+x-1?
(x-1)(X-1)(X-1)
Yes, I am in college but school has always taught a common factor method. Just curious.

Brainlet.

Easiest way is to break that shit up:
1) Deal with this only (x-1)(x-1)
2) You will get something along (ax^2+bx+c)
3) Then distribute, (ax^2+bx+c)(x-1) you should get six terms, some of which will combine

But at least I have the quadratic formula and understand complex numbers. Half my class cannot memorize the QF. Admittly, I'm still grasping Cramer's law.

>first outer inner last method
It doesnt work for this type of problem, FOIL is a rule only for multiplying two term expressions.
>>8400626
Holy shit. I derped so bad.
Actually your answer is wrong.
It's supposed to be
(x - 1)(X^2 - 2X + 1)
>>8400620
>foil
Just multiply everything by everything. Foil is something brainlet teachers came up with because they don't understand math.
(x-1)(X-1)(X-1)
=
x(X-1)(X-1) -1(X-1)(X-1)
=
xX(X-1)-x(X-1) -1(X-1)(X-1)
=
xXX-xX-x(X-1) -1(X-1)(X-1)
=
xXX-xX-xX+x-1(X-1)(X-1)
=
xXX-xX-xX+x-XX+X+X-1
=
x^3-3xX+3x-1
>>8400635
That 3rd line. Wtf
You can't "foil" trinomials. You just have to be smart enough to know that you need to distribute across every term
I remember high school brainlets never actually even made the connection between foil and just multiplying. They thought it was some kind of new operation and would struggle to memorize it.
>>8400633
Actually the answer is
(X-1)(X^2+1)
(X-1)(X+i)(X-i)
Sticky please.
>>8400645
x(X-1)(X-1)
=
[x(X-1)]X-1[x(X-1)]
=
xX(X-1)-x(X-1)
the full function is f(x)=-4(x+1)(x-1)^3
Expanding (x-3)^3 like the directions say to is throwing me off.
>>8400689
Oh ok. It took me a while to figure it out. What about the line before your final answer
>>8400702
You could seperate (x-1)^3 into
(x-1)(x-1)^2
Then multiply the (x-1) to the (x+1) to the left of it.
Do (x+1)(x-1) and (x-1)^2 separately.
Then multiply em together.
And then multiply by the -4 in front
>>8400631
Sure it does
>>8400630
you're in college and you think those 2 things make you not a brainlet?
>>8400631
>much FOIL
FOIL is a method for stupid retards that can't grasp simple concepts as combinatorics.
