>senior math major
>would be totally at a loss if asked to do long division
any anons know this feel?

Just learn it
yea i have problems with super simple stuff too sometimes
not nearly as bad as forgetting long division, but i nearly failed linear algebra AND calculus 3 because i kept making simple computation errors like forgetting about a minus sign or something
also i can barely add/multiply single digit numbers in my head
sometimes though i'll see a problem and the whole proof is instantly clear to me, like 4 pages of work becomes obvious for a second

I genuinely believed I was the only one for a very long time. I was so afraid to learn complex math because I could barely do multiplication, addition, and subtraction in my head and I need a calculator for multiplications higher than 2 digits but then I got into Algebra, Calculus, and Trigonometry and I realized I was really good at the grand scheme and doing more abstract math.

I also experience the latter part of your post randomly. Is this based on intuition? I am very artistic and creative, definitely more right/left brain balanced than most of my peers in math (at least in my personal experience, which definitely has its downsides sometimes.) Apparently intuition is more of a function of the right side of the brain.. so I'm just curious if that has anything to do with those moments. Do you relate this at all? It can be frustrating to practice or study, because if I go with my gut I am often led to the correct solution super quickly, but it makes me question if I'm just a good guesser or if I underestimate my understanding of the process.
Sorry if this is too much of a blog post or sounds retarded.

You should have had to do polynomial long division at some point, so that would force you to remember it.
>>8392128
Clearly you're a moron because long division with polynomials is super useful when studying modern algebra.

not a thing

Made up bs, problems are probably easy

so how is your first year in college going ?
I know exactly how you feel I only got up to algebra in high school.
I get fucked up with transformations of graphs. For example, y= 5sin(3x/5) -2 and i hit panic mode. Like shit these guys learned pre calc better than i did. Also i hate piecewise and absolute value functions
yea totally bro,
when I was in elemetry skol I completely couldn't do long divition, like it is my weakest math. But when I got into middle school algebra, voila I understood everything! I think some people are just better at calculation and others are better at the "bigger picture"

I never learnt long division because at the age we were taught it the problems were easy enough to do with shitty mental arithmetic. That being said I suck at mental arithmetic now in comparison to most other math people I know.
i don't have a clue about probabilities. Literally no knowledge about how to calculate binomial random experiments and shit like that. But i graduate in a program which heavily involves statistical mechanics in less than a semester. Khan isn't helping either, because it doesn't go into depth

>doing masters in math
>try taking physics course for easy credits
>get overwhelmed by pages of manipulating algebra and new notation
Also the presentation isn't rigorous enough.
i dont know what do with subbing n=0,1,2,... for integers; complex numbers and trigonometry. Also, I have no idea on how to do series lol.
I'm a 2nd year maths student and i'm almost finishing up on complex analysis. i failed real analysis and abstract algebra this year; i'm on academic probation... I may get kicked out of college/uni. Truth be told that I'm a entitled lazy careless brainlet.
*sigh*

Seriously, when you carry a number in multiplication, do you add it before or after you multiply the next digit? Nobody will give me a straight fucking answer here.
>>8392514
no one nearly fails at linear algebra and calculus because they forgot a sign error, you must of been bad at everything else as well

After

>integration by parts fucking my shit up
Undergrad physics major here. I can do it with polynomials since highschool. Why you cant do simple mathematics?

I'm sure he was talking about inter-universal trigonometry
