For my part (Physics, PhD and now former post doc research fellow) I aimed for a field where I could get an industrial exit and in the end that is what I did when I had to as student loans were getting infeasible large compared to the joke of a salary I was paid.

You don't go into science to get rich. If you want to find smart people who are money-focussed, look at business, especially the "quants".
