To be honest, his ideas about psychological development are mostly bullshit because they are too humanized. He's applying human feeling and intuition to the human mind and it doesn't work that way. It's way more arbitrary. When it comes to psychology, I mostly subscribe to cbt and diagnosing and finding out why people act how they do is never universal, even though people have a common grounds to leap off of so to speak.

The rest of his theory, in particular the exaggerated emphasis on sexuality and "drives" is outdated nowadays and replaced by models which focus on emotions and inner conflicts.

Has anyone read Freud in German? The deliberate mistranslation of Freuds work for the Anglo-American psychiatric establishment is covered at length in Bruno Bettleheim's "Freud and Mans Soul" So all opinions other than the German ones in this thread are worthless.

He made everything up but made "psychology" interesting for 2 reasons:

- The ability to judge others via made up jargon and concepts that sound official and suspect consensus based controls

- Got away with so much extreme bullshit that it encouraged other narcissists/egotists and groupthink control freak with inflated to go about accusing people with neologisms, projection and confirmation bias

His work laid the groundwork for the field of modern psychology. With that said:
