If we can say you can create big numbers by multiplying smaller numbers... then you can take big numbers, and break them up into the smaller numbers that when you multiply make big numbers again.

This is like taking a car and breaking it up into the chassis, the engine, the wheels etc.

It's useful through all of math and Engineering as the 'parts' of something tend to have interesting properties, commonly to be cancelled out, that aren't immediately obvious from the whole. This simplifies the expression

Factorising something means to find and write its factors. Factorisation is the process of factorising. Polynomials like x^2+2x+1 have factors like (x+1)(x+1).
