Can mechanical engineers get a job at nintendo? Who designs the consoles and stuff, they are mechanical engineers right?

What about disney? They have theme park rides, right? Can I get a job at nasa?

What the fuck do mechanical engineers even do? Every single company jobs listing website I go to lists a bunch of jobs for electrical engineering, computer science, even civil engineering, but I hardly ever see a job offering for mechanical engineering

we don't do anything. Mech E is gay. fuck off, we're full.
>>
>>8021711
You're looking in the wrong places then, mechanical engineers can basically get a job anywhere that requires mechanical design. I know a guy who's a mechE who works at fucking Tiffanys designing jewelry molds. Mechanical engineers don't know shit about electronics above physics II unless they go to grad school
>>
>>8021724
yeah you are right

it is gay

I'm switching to EECS like any smart interesting heterosexual person would

then i can get a job at nintendo

>Mechanical engineers don't know shit about electronics above physics II unless they go to grad school

thats not true at all. controls is a big thing in ME.

although i can understand why you would think that, as most ME's are dogshit at programming and electronics in general.

>Nintendo
Consoles are designed by electrical engineers and computer engineers, with a VERY close watch by management, as these devices have to be sold at a loss but ultimately prove to be a profitable venture for the company. If you go into this field, you will have very, very little in the way of freedom to design, from what I imagine. Also, as such an old, set-in-its-ways japanese company, the work environment at nintendo is extremely insular and your chances of even getting an interview probably lie with being a native moon having a few relatives at the company. Simply on virtue of you being on this english imageboard, and clearly being around undergraduate age, I have to be honest, I highly doubt you can get a job there on a technical level.

>Disney
Yes, this is largely staffed by mechanicals, and you can definitely get a job here, so long as you have a good enough pedigree and interview to convince them. Still way more likely than nintendo. I would recommend going to a lesser-known company first.

>nasa
NASA has a wide variety of job titles with different requirements and responsibilities, of course a mechanical could find work there (not that your discipline matters THAT much, so long as it is a semi-respectable one where you at least have to take calculus and such). That said, NASA is the fucking rock stars of engineering, so imagine some of the hardest fucking work of your life to get there. For what its worth, a chemical engineer at my school worked at NASA over the summer (it was an environmental engineering job title, not sure what exactly she did). She did not take a permanent position there, not sure why.

Like I said, your specific discipline of engineering does not matter as much as you think it does. Just dont try to be a professional electrician or a process designer at a chemical plant unless you have some kind of extracurricular career proof of your abilities.

And if you see an opening for a civE position, you should fucking apply.

but construction is boring as fuck fampai.

I am a fairly average freshman btw,

where does the average mechanical engineering graduate get a job after graduation? my brother is premed can i ever hope to make as much money as he does or no
>>
>>8021745
What year are you in?

Everyone has high hopes for their first job while they are still UG. Then their dreams get crushed. Think of it like those high hopes of where you would go to college while you were in your junior year of high school and reality hadnt set in yet.

Your first job probably wont be glamorous, but thats because as a fresh college graduate, you are a soft idiot who needs to be trained, both technically and in terms of becoming a functioning employee.

Just take that shitty first job, it is not like you have to stay there for the rest of your life.
>>
>>8021749
i left construction to get an engineering degree. you don't have to tell me about starting from the bottom.

let me put it to you this way. i was so bored with construction that i took a paycut as a union man to be a CAD monkey in aerospace.

construction is a technical dead end unless you are working on mega builds. your primary job as an engineer is running around putting out logistical fires and explaining basic math to foremen.

if thats your jam, feel free to do construction. i found it shallow.
>>
>>8021748
as a freshman, do not worry about job stuff yet. This will be one of the last summers you will have job-free, if not the last. Not to mention, no one wants you as an intern. Rising junior interns are often called useless, so imagine what the average employer thinks of you.

How your brother does with premed depends on what he does after premed. Of course you hear about doctors making shit loads of money, but that is only the top surgeons, specialists, managers and such. For every genius neurosurgeon, there 20 medical assistants and pediatricians. Most engineers have a much higher standard, but maybe less spectacle potential, if you want to call it that. Not that some engineers dont make it big.

Dont compare yourself to your brother, and if you are a mechanical for pay reasons or prestige reasons, do yourself a favor and drop out now. You cant build a career without genuine passion for it on some level.

Which engineering jobs pay me a lot but has me do barely anything all day?
>>
>>8021765
of course, civils dont necessarily JUST do construction. Construction is just the most obvious choice.
>>
I'm a computer engineer who works for a company that does industrial lighting control. There's three mechanical engineers in the office. They're designing some new relays, some automatic window blinds, and some power sockets that snap together with springs and stuff.

> Every single company jobs listing website I go to...
HR departments are pretty bad at understanding the differences between fields of engineering. You'll find some jobs perfect for a mechanical engineer that say something like "Requirements: Civil Engineering degree". Don't worry about it and apply anyway.
