I got a supposedly "<1mw" green laser pointer (same as pic attached) that gets brighter after 20 seconds.
At full brightness it will melt a hole through thin plastic and if pointed at a metal temperature contact probe it will register ~50°c in a few seconds. It will not burn paper or light a match. At full beam it is too hot to point at the skin for more than 2 seconds.
Is this typical for a 1mw laser pointer?
Thanks

Idk but how do I get one and how much does it cost?
>>7989176
Fleabay.
Protip. Don't aim the beam at a camera. Fucked my tablet up. Glad it's a work tab.

Like 4$ delivered
No help from laser bros?
>>7989163
nigga 1mw is nothing
lasers go up to 5mw are toys and safe and legal everywhere, they use it to point at shit in classrooms etc
yours is 5 times weaker
>>7989163
That's way more than 1 mW OP. That's fucking awesome. I'm guessing it's around 50-100 mW. You could make a laser power meter and test if you want exact numbers, but first where did you get it OP cause that's fucking awesome!
I have a samilar one i got off a chink site. Though its actually less than 1mW like it says. Not hot on skin, but does go very far.

first:it's normal, a laser doesn't go full power right away, it needs time to stabilize
second:if I remember correctly, the "1mW" means that a certain percentage of the laser pointers will deliver 1mW. It doesn't prevent the laser pointers from giving off more power. Also:

>yours is 5 times weaker
Clearly it isn't. It's supposed to be, but he's obviously got a much stronger model.

Yeah probably a fucked power regulator or shit housing.

Infrared hazards of diode-pumped solid-state laser pointers
Green laser light is generated from an infrared laser beam, which should be confined within the laser housing; however, more than 75% of the devices tested were found to emit infrared light in excess of the limit. (wikipedia)
>>7990817
What would be a good way of minimizing the escaped infrared light? Tape up the housing and put an IR filter over the lens?

Op here. This is the Item I got.

Am I in danger if I look at the point reflected off a matt surface, wall etc?

The particle discharge could be so great that it could fling you into the future to year A.D. 802,701

How do you make a power meter?
Does the fact that it made a contact thermometer read 50°c but won't light a match (red) give an indication of output?
>>7989163
protip: 1mW lasers from ebay are actually 300mW
>>7991951
yeah, it means that it's probably more than 5 mW or you live in a weird part of the universe where thermodynamics does not apply.
You can make a simple laser power meter from a piece of matte black coated aluminium foil and an IR thermometer:

Pic related. Thx for the link.
>>7991608
if the surface is really shiny, so shiny that it reflects into your eyes maybe. Basically don't point it at your eyes and consider purchasing some laser safety goggles.
>>7990841
Well you could just buy a laser pointer from a reputable source. Modifying a laser diode is really fucking difficult.
You got lucky OP, you got a high powered laser for cheap! It's worth keeping around for sure.
>>7992954
Ok, did this and got a reading of 113 mw!!
>>7993573
Somebody told me that green lasers work best against black matches. Coloured one in with a sharpie and yep, now it lights them easily from 6 inches.
Trouble is, I wanted it as a laser pointer but I don't want to blind colleagues. How much can I sell a 113 mw laser for?

What would happen if someone accidentally pointed it to someone's eyes? Permanent or temporary damage?
