I emailed the guy who came up with the math for the cube in the movie a couple years ago. He sent me the paper he wrote on how it works. It's pretty neat.

I'd say the first movie was a thriller/horror movie. Sequel was more pop/sci horror film. Prequel (actually 3rd to be released) was a dystopian comedy or parody of the original movie.
