What's the day to day job like of a typical run of the mill mechanical engineer or electrical engineer?

You sit in a chair all day, stroking yourself off while thinking to yourself how smart you are

Depends on how smart you are.
If you're smart, you could be doing design, which consists of doing completely different stuff every day. If you're more hands-on, you could be doing field work somewhere. If you're smart and good with people, you'll probably find yourself in management. If you're dumb, you'll probably find yourself walking around a hospital or factory floor mindlessly testing equipment and filling out a work order when something breaks.
And all of these will pay more than comfortable salaries.

my workflow goes as such.
>sit on ass in my house with my cell phone around
>get a call to go somewhere
>do travel stuff/study documentation
>get to place
>talk to customer
>look at customers stuff
>do a gorillion tests on the equipment
>make a recommendation
>maybe supervise an install/repair
>do paperwork
>go home after 2-8 weeks.
>repeat
what's it like for a physicist? i find most industry positions are mostly for military like camo, radar, and so forth, but i'm curious about the actual routine.

Sounds comfy

> tfw you actually found depreciation calculations kinda neat
Better than those experimental design calculations

I did it for a while as EE when I was working in a city while my gf finished grad school. Then we moved and I took a design job in ICs, which was hard but very rewarding. Now I'm in management, which is very comfy (especially the salary).
