Can I get a physicist and a chemist to comment on whether the mathematics in the pictures would EVER be necessary?

besides ? 11, of course.
>>
Not really but AS a physicist i can tell you, that if you struggle with these questions you should not even try getting into physics
>>

thanks for the answer
i'm just too goddamn lazy to do something i see no applications for
>>
this is from pre-calc at College of the Desert in California, just in case any1 wonders.

>>7924923
oh yea, michael mcjilton's class

>>7924911
oh, & missed 8
>>
>>7924915
This. You should be able to solve most of these in your head basically.
>>
>>7924947
i'm just wondering from a political/power standpoint, pretty butthurt that this class is keeping me out of the tougher science track because i just can't do something for nothing, yea ik, i'd be getting those higher science openings...

Biochemist here.

Yes.

thanks, what applications?

interesting.

mind elaborating?

as said before, this stuff is trivial. This is to make sure you aren't retarded and can actually think through basic properties of math. Yes, almost all of these questions are >>skills<< you need in higher science.

Forget about thinking "can I apply this particular question in real life?"

That's how stupid people think about math. A person who is serious about kickboxing shouldn't question why they need to learn to stretch or how stretching is going to help them in a fight
>>
>>7924982
perhaps. otherwise, you're just a follower
>>
This stuff is absolutely babby-tier. Pretty much any science you go into (phys, bio, chem) is going to require the math in most of these exercises. What the hell.
>>
>>7924982
i'm just saying, i go to a school funded by the GOVERNMENT. They'd BETTTER be doing things the RATIONAL, lean way, they're taking tax payers money, they better be teaching things that can actually b applied
& don't say well we physicists and chemists are the roots of money, because if you say that here, you may be a scientist, but u sure as hell aren't one that matters
flame/ban shield up

It depends on what you'll do after the Bs.
As a Molecular Chemist (Msc) and Theoretical Chemist (wich means that I basically leave and breath Quantum Physics) that is necessary (it's basic stuff really, you just need to understand these things, for example without a working knowledge of complex numbers you wont ever be able to truly understand any kind of molecular simmetry).

tl;dr: unless you're planning to become a lab monkey you need to understand this stuff

>applications

Its basic quantitative reasoning. If you can't do this backwards and in heels you won't be able to do any sort of meaningful applications.

>>7924979
Local maxima/minima of real valued functions on an interval (a, b) have derivative zero. You can optimize certain things this way (the classic example is showing a square encloses the most area of any closed rectangular fence arrangement.) This is however an extremely basic, cookbook method. To do anything nontrivial you really have to have a good quantitative sense

^This sort of thing is useful in computational drug design.

Training someone in only applications produces a human calculator. They're useful until that applied skillset gets automated by someone. if you haven't taught them how to think and how to learn, only to plug and chug out things, you are stagnating progress.

We have enough trained monkeys, that's why entry level research positions are so cheap. Producing more on purpose isn't helpful

>>7924907
good old high school

damn I miss it
>>
>>7924903
Yes you dumb fuck.
In physics, chemistry, finance, engineering and in some instances of biology you DEFINITELY have to at least know basic algebra and calculus. For physics chemistry and finance especially, you'll have to know a hell of a lot more than that.
>>
Are you fucking retardo?
That's precalc and you use calc for physical chemistry to calculate bond angles, hell precalc is used all over gen Chem.
>>
>>7924920
>i'm just too goddamn lazy to do something i see no applications for

you're a fucking retard. the application is bettering yourself and learning you ignorant twit.
