The standard model is about to breakdown. Why are you guys not panicking?
>>7922625
Why would we panick? It's exciting at worst.

>100+ years worth of physics goes straight into the trash
How the fuck is that exciting? What the fuck is wrong with you /sci/?
>>7922647
What exactly goes into the trash by discovering new subatomic particles? Nothing.

Let's say that tomorrow irrefutable proof that the standard model is incorrect is found.
Would professors still teach it to students that had the standard model as a subject this semester, or can universities change what they are to teach in the fly?
>>7922677
How are you supposed to model a new theory if you have never seen any before? They'll teach it and point out where it is wrong so you can develop a new one.
>>7922576
>Why are you guys not panicking?
because i knew the standard model fundamentalists were wrong to cling to their great theory like it was the be-all end-all descriptions of how the universe worked everywhere all the time
>>7922576
Im going there soon

>Implying algebra and calculus disprove arithmetic
m8 that's not even the same
>>7922647
Yeah and quantum mechanics and relativity mean we never use newtonian mechanics to model the real world. Oh wait.
>>7922576
We're still using newtonian physics, you know.

Are you on drugs or something, or are you so gung-ho on your current hypothesis you don't like being proven wrong?

thankyou! someone said it.

>implying hospitals and research facilities will abandoned medical imagining because the standard model isn't the king of the hill anymore.
My statement still stands, the standard model will continue being taught regardless of the possibility of being disproved.
This isn't like your dwarf planet pluto meme, people won't just abandoned the standard model immediately.
>>7923130
it really doesn't matter as much as you think it does.
>a physical theory, which is astonishing valid at the energy scales from which the experimental inputs have renormalized the theory, isn't valid at higher energy scales--where fields which were integrated out in the effective action would dominate the behavior
>discovering this would cause people to abandon the theory for applications at energy scales where it's wildly accurate
Yeah that sounds about right to me. The standard model isn't necessarily something people are banking on holding up to arbitrary energy scales, and the way in which it fails can give hints on how to solve the current problems with it.

Get out of this board, degenerate pedophile.
Weeaboos are a burden on society.

Just as what happened with classical mechanics.
OP's a fag.

>Would professors still teach it to students that had the standard model as a subject this semester, or can universities change what they are to teach in the fly?
Dumbass, they still teach the Bohr atom.
>>7923987
It's pretty unlikely a student would have to spend much time studying the standard model itself - you'd probably learn about QED, electroweak interactions, and QCD separately. This won't change. People doing research might start researching something different, but classes wouldn't change too much because the aforementioned theories would still be the components on the new theory, whatever that may be.
When undergrads are given lists of particles and told "this is the standard model", they might now be given a longer list.

Should every physicist that contributed to this model be sued for all their research money and salary?
