it doesn't hurt to care about deep space
it's not like we're trading off world peace for research
also, if you think about it, there's a LOT of fields of research that don't affect us in any way, yet are loaded with lots of really smart people
IMO, cosmology and astronomy are some of the most noble of the "doesn't affect us" pursuits

Studying some exotic fenomena can give us more inside how everything works and when we understand it we might be able to use it ourselves.

Besides the fact that studying deep space is a passion for many. Studying the universe does indeed affect us. How can we learn about the laws that govern the world if we only look around us? As we look to the skies, we see the most extreme conditions ever. Conditions that even man couldn't imagine. These extremes push our ideas of physics and math to the limits. So many advances in human understanding is a direct result of studying the night sky.

Cause we are a part of deep space. We are really just studying ourselves. It's what we were before we were born and it's what we will be again after we are dead. After you are dead you might regret not seeing the rest of the universe from this perspective.
