What's the best way to get practice reading other people's code and to get the most from it? Any particular code bases that are best suited for the task, i.e. that are well written, so as to internalize best practices, and with enough documentation that I'd be able to get going at a decent pace?

By doing it. Everyone has different styles of writing and the more you read the more you will be able to understand.
