I don't think depression needs an evolutionary explanation, especially because it can lead to suicide. Also, people don't need to be depressed to be submissive.

Depression can be "basically" a lot of things. It's a breakdown in the brain's internal punishment and reward system. Social isolation is just one of the situations that can lead to it.
