But wouldn't we want a "3D" interferometer with 3 arms? If a gravitational wave travels along the plane of the interferometer, we wouldn't see shit. (or would we?)

Layman here. I think it would just add another level of observation to our panopoly of sensors studying the universe.
As the cosmic background radiation confirmed the age and start state of the universe, I figure gravity wave studies may determine more ahout the fundamental nature of our fabric, and, may detect gravity sources outside our known universe. Anything else accruing is unimaginable at our current state of tech and knowledge.
