What most people either 1) don't know or 2) outright refuse to admit is that there are several subfields within Psychology. The majority of people believe that the only field in Psychology is Clinical (counseling/therapy/etc.) and to be fair, that is the only interaction with Psychology that most people will encounter during their lives. On a related note, many people believe that psychologists and psychiatrists are the same thing.

If you want to study human behavior, you can easily go down fields such as Cognitive Psychology, Behavioral Neuroscience (formerly Biopsychology), Neuroscience itself, and many other types of fields.

You can also get a B.S. in America, depending on where you study, as you stated. While my undergrad program offered one or two 'Clinical and Counseling'-esque courses, I did not take them. No. However I've never been formally involved with the field itself, like most people that realized in early childhood that their brain wasn't working on magic, and didn't take its input / output chain as a self referential truth, I focused heavily on psychology. It was not a mechanistic approach, it was strictly from the top down and relied on my own perspective and controlling for error. Generating these abstract structures teaches you as much about yourself than the person you're trying to figure out, probably more.

I'll sound like a prick for this, but it is readily obvious who got this established and out of the way early on, and who did not. If you didn't and cannot discover the means for yourself, or want something your own mind might never have time to make, it can be worth it.

People who don't understand underlying principles of psychology come across as fairly deficient, to be completely honest. They want to act like they understand you and the world, but with every word they show they've barely tried to understand themselves. Nothing is more obnoxious than disjointed behavior that doesn't seem self aware. For these sorts, I'd rather have them yanked out of their lives, shoved in some room somewhere, and forcefully taught some psychology and philosophy. I guarantee it would be a net improvement for the world.

Unfortunately you're wasting your breath. The concept of mental illness is a form of delusion itself, and it's too late for people to quickly reject these sham, scam, "fields". I think it'll happen slowly over the next 100 years, if humanity has that long.

Psychology started as a branch of Philosophy that began to pretend to be a science, roughly with the dawn of behaviorism.
