It's as much a science as possible; the problem being that the human mind is complex. So call it what you want. You'll never describe a person's mental behavior with equations and you can't describe the component parts very well, however you can describe a person's mental behavior.
>>
It's a form of applicable science, but your pic (Psychology Today) is the biggest disgrace to the field that has ever existed.
>>
>>7720888
I'm pretty sure that computational neuroscience would disagree with you on that one mate.
>>
>>7720899
>applicable science
I'm assuming you mean applied science. Yes there is lots of applied psych research but there is also really important basic psychology research being done. Most studies in JEP for example are not applied. Research funded by NSF is also basic.

Ah, look there is our daily psychology trashing thread. Arent you a tough boy for posting it again for the millionth time?
>>
>>7721008
Sadly as much as I love neuroscience their percentage of repeatable findings for behavioral effects are even less than psychology and by a decent margin. Though unlike the other anon I don't think it's a lost cause only a complex issues that needs more time to mature.
>>
>>7721008
but neuroscience is just too.... uhm.... young? unreliable? Psychology is a social science, but it is trumping neuroscience at this point in time
>>
>>7720827
>social science

That term does not mean anything. Stop using it. Something is either a science, or is not a science.

There is only one social subdiscipline in psychology, and that is called "Social Psychology". And a very small subset of psychologists are social psychologists.

>Psychology Today is the biggest disgrace to the field that has ever existed.

its a fucking blog aggregator, just stop reading the bad ones.

>applied science
At least you didnt call it a discrete science, or a real science.

>>7723713
>neuroscience

Neuroscience is another name for psychology. The reason it caught on is because the public is too daft to understand "psychology" does not mean "social psychology"
>>
As long as you dont know basics of psychology you shouldnt say shit, Im ChemE but got quite interested in psychology some time ago, changed my point of view 180 degrees (360 KEK KEKE KEKEKEK)
Rly, Freud and other boyz did great shit and I dont mind if anyone is into calling psychology science

Or if you dont want psychology to be called science dont call medicine a science as well, cuz its scheme field

> Freud and other boyz did great shit and I dont mind if anyone is into calling psychology science

does not compute
what freud did was as far removed from science as it could get. he did stumble upon (very few) good ideas but you could easily call them low hanging fruit
>>
>>7725304
>>7725271
From a contemporary point of view Freud's work is philosophy, not psychology.
>>
>>7720827
It's a *cough*pseudo*cough* science alright.
>>
Psychology is very much a science. It's just has lots of problems. First off, psychology is really hard to study. Way harder than physics. It also has some problems common to all social sciences, eg. what the hell to do about p-value. Plus some structural problems common to most of science, eg. how to incentivize replication studies. Some difficulties are because undergrads who like science but don't like math think, "hey maybe I could do psychology!" And although they get weeded out a little, there are still so many they continue to clog the professorships with crappy scientists that can't do math. Finally, psychology is a very new science. Physics's father is Galileo in 1600. Psyschology's father is Wilhelm Wundt in 1879.

Psychology to Neuroscience is like Alchemy to Chemistry.

OTOH, Sociology is scary. It's like Thermodynamics, using laws of big numbers, where single humans are like single atoms in gas, individually unpredictable but as a crowd following a statistical model with disturbing accuracy.
>>

>Psychology to Neuroscience is like Alchemy to Chemistry.
Chemistry is all of the science that alchemy had. Neuroscience is only a subset of psychology. The rest of psychology could be practiced as a science, it just often isn't.

can't expect much from a group of bored virginal autists

It lacks falsifiability and predictive power. It is not a science.

Can we stop making this thread?
>>
Psychology is getting better, they have recently started going through previous experiments to find what is actually repeatable. It has a ways to go, but at least its improving. All sciences spend sometime chasing ghosts, whether it is string theory, alchemy, or homunculus. Do what you can to aid psychology, they could use our help after all.
