What should a freshman CS major like myself be doing this summer?

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

What should a freshman CS major like myself be doing this summer? I'm not really sure if I want to do grad school or go into industry but I'm leaning for grad school. Are REU gigs hard to get? Or should I just pester some professors here? Alternatively, I might be able to score a decent paid software engineering internship based on connections.

What'd I do?
>>
>>7711021

Do you actually know how to program?
>>
>>7711026
Not that guy but CS is considered a meme here. Mainly because it is a bad decision fueled by the media that just wants to lower wages for software engineers.

If you want me to elaborate on that I will but you probably know by now.

Anyways, get an internship. That is all you should be thinking about. You can think about grad school when you are a senior and can actually ask professors to aid them in their research without them laughing in your face.
>>
>>7711046
I will have 2 semesters of Java by the summer in addition to the C++ and python I picked up in highschool. I'm pretty pleb but whatever

>>7711048
It's whatever. I just went for CS because A. coding is fun B. I love math C. I can make big bucks if I'm ahead of the pack w/ scalable income unlike engineerfags. So you really think I should go for an internship rather than research? I want to get into a good grad school, do you think I could do that not doing research until the rising senior summer?
>>
Data scientists make $100k+ and degrees are aquirable in less than two years.

Glad the word is getting out. Solidarity!
>>
Are minors worth anything to grad schools? I'm thinking of picking up a math minor.

Also, is it true there are some CS programs out there that don't even cover algorithms? What the fuck
>>
>>7711021
>What should a freshman CS major like myself be doing this summer?

chillaxing
>>
>>7711021
Write a video game, write a blog, implement something from a math class, learn Prolog, install and use Linux, learn Scheme, dick around with Matlab, learn C, build a personal home server and set up all the software, study a weird data structure, write an old school AI program, implement Conway's Game of Life, read a fucking book.
>>
>>7711087
But those don't get me $
>>
>>7711178
It got me the $, and I didn't even do half of those.

I can not relate to people's view of "money = happiness", so killing them should increase my comfort with society

I like the startrek society. We should kill off this greedy generation, form a new world order, and wear onsies.
>>
>>7711310
Nigger I'm considering academia, money isn't my main concern. I just want some cash for the summer.
>>
>>7711021
Do research or try to secure an internship. Get practical experience as soon as possible.
>>
>>7711063
>java
>c++
>python

Yes you're a pleb you dont know cs until you can code in binary
>>
>>7711310
>I can not relate to people's view of "money = happiness"
It's not that hard to understand; having money means you don't have to think about money. But yeah, people who stick with a field for money are shit. People who join the field for money may or may not be shit.

No help coming for you, buddy. You chose the other meme degree, physics. You deserve all that you get.
>>
So what ISN'T a meme degree?
>>
>>7711991
If your degree is not popular in mainstream culture and also not pushed by the media then you are not a meme degree.

CS is both popular in mainstream culture and pushed by the media. Physics is only popular in mainstream culture. They are both memes but CS is a bit more memey.
>>
>>7711999
>>Ask what is not a meme degree
>>Am given the definition of a meme degree

So it's whatever the guys who regret going mech eng/chem say is a meme degree then?
>>
>>7712003
Damn you must be failing your logic class.

If you know what something is then you also know what something is not.

Also, I'm almost sure that mechanical and chemical engineering are meme degrees. Mainly because they are part of the so called "holy trinity" or EE, ME and CE that is popular everywhere.
>>
>>7712008
By CE I meant chemical engineering, not computer engineering. My bad.

... ... but CE is also a meme degree.
>>
>>7712008

You gave me subjective qualities in your definition, logic master. Do you even go to college or are you the guy who reads math books and pretends to be smart?
>>
>>7712012
>Subjective

Maybe my wording was subjective but ask yourself, why is CS a meme degree?

Becuase of videos like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvAsqPbz9Ro

It is being pushed by the media and if you read the comments you can see how it is now popular in mainstream culture. That is what makes a meme, of any kind, popularity with the keedz.

For physics just look at the big bang theory (the show) or some shit.

Also, I do read math books but that is because I am a proud pure mathematics major.
>>
>>7711975
I meant help with my socialisation issue. I need to spend more time working instead of talking/getting smashed in town

"Everyone should learn to code cause it makes them smarter" -Steve Jobs

That's where I closed the video

Big tip, if you don't know how to program in a unix/linux environment and don't know how to use command line tools you are shooting yourself in the foot.
I just came out of a class which was about programming in Unix and using Unix utilities, and nearly everyone had a C or lower because a lot of people can't grasp a completely new OS in 10weeks.
Also a lot of Jobs will expect you to know how to work with Lunix too.
>>
>>7712168
And to add, if you aren't learning in your free time you are a complete and utter retard and should get out of my field.
Also if you are looking for a sub-field in CS that has a good job potential pick Security or Computer Systems. These two fields are the best to get into because usually the CS students who can't do math, can't program, and can't tell the difference between memmove() and memcpy() will never think of touching those fields while they set out on producing "the newest epic fart app".

And be prepared to see 80% of your classmates switch to IT by year 3.

>What should a freshman CS major like myself be doing this summer

Switching out into EE, CpE, Math, or Statistics
>>

Budapest now has a thingy for CS majors:

http://www.ait-budapest.com/
>>
>>7711021
Were you a gentooman before starting or are you just a beginner? If you're a beginner you could profit a lit by fucking learning how to use and program a unix system. This way you won't embarass yourself later when you get a position. If you already know that, do an internship somewhere they don't do webdevelopement or something as trivial and irrelevant
>>
>>7712121
Ya dood you know better than steve jobs
