i came from fit to sci and straight into this thread and this confused the hell out of me.
most muscle tearing actually occurs during extension rather than contraction. this is obviously greater when bench pressing than when doing push ups.

Push ups are a meme exercise. Only DYELs do them.
Push ups with proper form should be enough to get your muscles growing. I'm sure you aren't doing proper form. If you are, you should start a progression to one armed push ups. Progression is the name of the muscle growth game.
