The band first began performing while students at Miami University. Chicago native guitar player Tom Schleiter and fellow Miami student and Green, Ohio drummer Kevin Kane who had played in another band on campus, were joined on bass by Daniel McMahon, a friend of Schleiter’s from when they both attended St. Viator High School in Arlington Heights, Illinois. After a search for a vocalist, another Miami student and friend, Alec Cyganowski joined the group.[1] The band began touring and developed a reputation for energetic live shows,[1][2] sparking a large amount of interest from record labels.[1] The band moved back to Chicago and signed to Fueled By Ramen Records, who released their first full-length, The Kicks of Passion, on July 31, 2007. A spot playing at SXSW[3] and nationwide touring ensued in the US in 2007, opening for Hawthorne Heights, Amber Pacific, Monty Are I, Melee, From First to Last, and The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus.[2][4] Most recently, the band's single "Powerspace Snap Bracelet" was featured in SPIN,[5] who also reviewed their album,[6] and the band was profiled in Aquarian magazine.[7] The band has toured with The Classic Crime, Envy on the Coast, Kaddisfly, Madina Lake, Mayday Parade, Brighten, We The Kings, and at PunkSpring in Tokyo Japan in support of the album.

In January 2008 Tom Schleiter took a temporary leave from Powerspace to complete his degree at Miami University. Guitarist Max Perenchio filled in while Tom was attending college. Tom rejoined the band to play in Tokyo at PunkSpring, and after graduation.

Starting on April 16, 2008 and ending on the morning of April 17, several of the guys took part in an all night chat on the forum, absolutepunk.net. Along with fans that stayed all night, they broke the previous record, held by The Audition, for most posts in a news thread, with over 5100 replies over about 8 hours.

On May 20, 2008, Dan made the decision to leave the band. He was replaced on tour by Jake Serek.

Upon making landfall on northeastern Mindanao on September 1,[13] Ike became the strongest tropical cyclone to strike the Philippines since Typhoon Joan of the 1970 Pacific typhoon season.[14] Typhoon Ike also struck a country a mere four days after Tropical Storm June inundated the northern portion of the country, which claimed 53 lives[15] and the islands were also suffering from the nation's worst economic crisis since independence in 1946.[16] Power was knocked out to much of the country for four days.[12]

The typhoon left a path of destruction in the Philippines that was at its time unparalleled in modern Philippine history.[1] Most of the deaths were in the province of Surigao del Norte, where around 1,000 died[1] and 27 towns were flattened.[17] More than half of Surigao del Norte's cattle, goat, and pig population were killed.[8] Waves 8 ft (0 m) slammed into the provincial capital of Surigao City, which result in 85 casualties.[18] Around 90% of homes in the city were leveled, leaving 90,000 out the town's 135,000 citizens homeless. Fresh water shortages occurred after power was lost in Surigao City.[19] To the southwest in Mainit, numerous homes were swept away after Lake Mainit overflowed its banks,[20] leading to the deaths of over 200 people.[19] On nearby Nonoc Island, 101 were killed, primarily due to drownings,[18] and all but 20 houses on the 2,000 island were demolished.[21] Province-wide, 330 people were wounded[22] and 70% of homes, mostly wood,[23] and 80% of buildings were destroyed,[8] which resulted in 480,000 homeless.[24] Typhoon Ike was considered the worst typhoon to affect the province in 20 years.[25] Further south, in the province of Surigao del Sur, 16 people perished.[26]

John Clerk (1689-1757) was a Scottish physician and grandson of the first Clerk of Penicuik. He was the cousin of Adam Smith. Clerk studied at Leiden under Herman Boerhaave. In Scotland, Clerk was noticed by Archibald Pitcairne and from whom he was given private instruction enabling him to graduate MD at St Andrews in 1711 without taking final examinations.[1]

Clerk was mainly responsible for the second edition of the Edinburgh Pharmacopoeia in 1722 and was described by Dr William Cullen as one who chiefly introduced judgement, accuracy and elegance into private prescriptions in this country. Clerk was also a co-founder of the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.[2] From 1729, Clerk played an important role in the medical teaching at the University of Edinburgh.

He commenced practice in Edinburgh about the time Pitcairne was reaching the age of retirement. The recommendation of a young physician, whom he had trained, proved most acceptable to Pitcairne's friends and patients. Clerk fully justified the confidence placed in him by his instructor and came to be recognised as the most distinguished physician in Scotland.

In 1714 John Clerk became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and took a prominent part in College affairs, as a member of Council, Censor, Vice-President and President from 1740 to 1744. He took an active interest in the planning, the building and management of the Royal Infirmary and was a liberal contributor. Lord Provost George Drummond publicly acknowledged the help he had received from Clerk.
