It's not that they think they themselves are gay and are feeling anxious about it, it's that they literally do not want to be around gay people and do not want them to be part of society because they perceive homosexuality to be destructive. It's not that they are concerned about whether or not they are gay, it's because they fear that they are literally losing their mind and losing control over their place in society. the actual gayness matters very little, it's more about becoming the "other" and losing everything one values as a result. it's a very deep existential fear regarding one's identity. The natural response, typically, is to freak out.
