Maybe the most fascinating work in my life, yet. Near the end of his life, Feldman has definitely coined his own style, which were a static, monolithic continuums full of inner suspense and isolated musical episodes. This is actually work for four instruments - as silence should be taken as a fourth instrument. With help of extremely long durations and "precise" implementation of irregularities in measures, Feldman was able to decompose the music as we now it - to destroy the meaning of time in it. With this he fully realized the idea of pointilism in Webern's music. Each sound is important in itself, and only afterwards - in the mind of listener - the sound is connected to the large image. Listener's will to listen and endure can thus construct the work, to constitute its sense, but this has to be based on the demands of atomary and strictly individual sounds and on what they give per se.
For Philip Guston thus starts as gigantic living organism, where you get lost after hour of listen. The game of perception and memory is set in process. But what is particularly interesting with this piece is that in the end you realize that it still lives its own life. It's a hommage to Feldman's dead friend, and after 3 and a half hour the work breaks into more classical (though rhythmically rather imperfect) mourning descending chords. The alien organism thus finally broke down to the kind of requiem and showed that it feels, too. In the end the listener is already very sensitive on every sound that occurs, and thus every chord struck on piano hurts, every weeping tone played on flute is painful. And then you realize the truth - it's not the musical work - it's Feldman himself crying, not Feldman which has composed this work, but Feldman who has been transformed into this song, into this organism.
And time exists when is perceived, time is relative, time can be erased and turn into eternity.
