hey LoLo what do you think about adding the spices to olive oil before putting in the rest of the ingredients
I thought well some extracts are made with oil and oil is nonpolar so maybe it would help pull out the flavor into the oil and then spread it all over the rice and beans and onion when I added them

I think you'll risk burning the spices if the oil gets hot.. they're dry so it's best to wait until you have something wet in the pan. This IS how a roux is made though (with flour and butter) and when I make chili sauce for enchiladas I add chili powder and cumin directly to the roux so I'd say it's fine as long as you stir the spices constantly and don't let them burn.
