There's been a lot of hate and vitriol spewed towards "normies" as of late. This is evidently due to the normie menace appropriating the culture of the mid-2000's internet, warping the already hackneyed and overused into into even more graceless and unfunny husks of what was once comedy. This very board is a parody of the misunderstanding normies have of what memes are, and how they develop.
But let me argue in defense of them all, for a moment. Allow me to pull back the curtain and reveal something very important about normal people.
Sports and sports fan culture is a meme.
The religious and state-recognizerd institution that is marriage is a meme.
The family unit is a meme.
Societal norms enforced to retain the community and comfort brought by a highly tailored way of life are a meme.
Civilization is a meme.
Normies have been the real meme-masters, the real in-joke craftsmen, all along. We paste some other character over George Costanza's head and think we're clever. Normies have been snidely redeveloping their own memes over thousands of years. Any given meme contains layers upon layers of ironic and/or referential content that you would only fully grasp the absurd appeal of if you weren't a fucking newfag who refused to lurk more. This very post, on this very board, is possible only because the technologies and culture responsible for the inspiration of this website are all built upon the memes of the past. Not because Moot and a bunch of weebs broke new ground. This post, and all posts responding to it, are simply minor, uninspired derivatives of continually evolving running gags.
That's the truth. We just couldn't grasp the tapestry of it all because we're failures. As such, we relegated ourselves to an enclosed social environment where we could ameliorate our conditions by making our own weak, infantile memes. That joint effort has backfired spectacularly.

Unfortunately, no. All forms of comedy, and by extension all ideas that spread or repeat, are now recognized only as ironic and bitter parodies of the meme phenomenon itself. The sharing of thought is no longer sincere.

Why do you equate all memetic phenomena with humor?
Normies may be busy memesters as you say, but their approach to memes is actually not self aware or humorously self-referential. Memes in and of themselves matter little (unless they're really good memes such as dicky fox), it is how they're presented, chewed and regurgitated that matters. You give a meme to a normie -- any meme, be it a really super and cool 4chan meme or a RL cultural norm -- and they reduce it to something stupid, simple, unimaginative and just plain boring.
And perhaps that's just it. You propose that we retreat to /s4s/ because we are failures, but perhaps we are here because it's a retreat from the boredom of the normie world.
