Most anime is garbage tier fan service. There are mature adventure shows like Ergo Proxy and Legend of the Galactic Heroes (two random examples), but ultimately modern anime has gone towards a path of edginess, tits, or both, and all else fails. It's always some loser guy that gets super awesome and gets the girl (see SOA, while it was fun, the plot exploded in the second arch and overall was based around the underdog plot just mentioned). And I blame the weaboos for fapping over it.

I don't watch intense amounts of anime anymore for the sole fact that I've seen most of the shows I've found deeply interesting and modern anime has largely been directed at an audience I'm not a part of. I stay posted on what's coming out, but I usually don't find the premise worthwhile.

I haven't seen it myself either actually, it just sprung to mind, I've seen enough to tell it's something different tho and every year I typically bump into something that isn't too shabby, whether it's up to the marque of the old greats? Not sure, but it'd have to fall pretty far before I'd call it garbage.
These sort of discussions are pretty common though, I've been thinking about running some statistic, going through all shows every season for the nearest 40 years, taking note of genres, tropes used, award winners of the years etc. to somehow see how things have changed.
There's screencaps from the 90's of people basically making the same claims of ""moeshit"" and how it's going downhill with quality, stories, creativity etc. Back then the viewers were a lot fewer as well, taking into account. But yea, some proper metrics are needed I think, if possible, too much personal opinions and emotions out there as one could see tonight for sure.

Just wanted to quickly throw in, Miyazaki expressed his frustration about how so many lonely and autistic kids took up drawing and then naturally became mangaka or light novel authors. They saw manga and anime as a hobby for lonelybois and shut-ins and went on to produce the current flood of low-effort, self-insert harem comedies. Miyazaki said this unfortunate development happened because the worst type of fanboy consumer has now turned author. Miyazaki has always maintained that authors of any medium should be people with lots of irl experiences to draw from.

Guin Saga, but it doesn't finish the story. If you want to find out next you have to read the novels which are the longest running series of novels in history, continued by multiple people after their predecessors died. Still a really good anime. You could also watch the old Ys anime, or Record of Lodoss War.
