What the hell were you expecting? I mean, I would agree that his response was really fucking stupid, but do you want to get showered with pity or something? If I had a family member who died, I'd confide it to my friend just to let it off my chest, and then immediately change the subject to keep it from getting awkward and forcing him into a position where he feels he has to feign caring to keep from upsetting me.
