Maybe you keep your head down low, and that's why they ask you if you're ok. Keeping your head really low might actually worry people more than just looking like you're about to cry, because it also may look like something is actually happening to you, maybe even to a point where they might think you're sick or something.
These are just my assumptions though, so it's probably not it.
