This is fucking STEM, I can't imagine what it's like for normals

did you even get a fucking degree?

It's easy for normals. A neurotypical can fit into any social environment and advance. If someone's neurotypical, not disabled, and poor for more than a few years it shows me they made really bad choices.

OP are you working for an onshore outsourcing company too? Cause I make 17.50/h as a programmer, but they trained me from scratch and put me on a 2 year contract after I passed the training course so I have to work for them at this low wage until then so they can recoup their cost of training me. But I had no experience or degree, they were willing to take me despite that and mold me into a programmer. I was happy for the opportunity.

I guess it sucks if you actually went to school to learn programming, but if that's the case not sure why you'd enroll in a program like this.

>>

Get a business degree and become a BA (Business analyst). Helps if you have familiarity with programming.

Salary around ~45k starting.
>>
>>39528001
>K&R
what is this?
>>
>>39527951
You need experience to get anywhere. You can get in at very low levels that pay less than $20/hour but until you rack up the necessary experience nobody will trust you with any real responsibility and you'll be at the entry level code monkey level making shit for money. But with like 2-3 years of experience? Man the fuckin world is your oyster. There is such a huge shortage of labor in the tech industry. There is SO MUCH shit that needs to be done and not nearly enough people to do it. Once you hit the magical 2 year mark you don't have to look for job offers anymore, the work comes to you.
>>

I thought ALL programmers knew of K&R. The most sacred of texts.

Question 2: how large is the leap from recreational/hobby programming to actually getting paid for it? How many LOC do you write a day? How difficult would you say your work is? What is the average problem you solve like? Do you do any complex programming, or is it just a bunch of simple tasks? When you work on large projects, how much of the overall program do you actually understand?

Tried getting into college as well but some bad luck and bad timing and a mistake when doing my financial aid destroyed that for now, all my classes got dropped at the cut-off date and it's too late to register. The responses in this thread are weird. Most jobs really don't pay much nowadays. Everything I see on job boards is 40k tops, and yes that's including STEM and programming. Every market is saturated with poor fucks desperate to get a job. Unless you're lucky or going in to be a wall street shark, nothing is going to give good pay. "In this economy?!" lot of wagies are just lying because they conflate salary with personal value, to say you feel its worth it to dedicate your time to a low-wage job is seen as an admission of low worth - and thus the NEETs were right
>>
>>39530096
>undergrads who haven't actually got a job and are just projecting a delusion about how much they'll make when they graduate

I also think that these threads attract people with decent income.
Often feels good to brag, even anonymously.

My take home after taxes is right at 3k every two weeks. I also do IT.

I would never work for anything less than 25 an hour. Just isn't worth my time.

Also, I assume everyone here states income before taxes?

In any trade you can just walk up to the manager and give him a firm handshake to get at least $50/hour on the spot.

Yeah, probably. People get fooled by unions and organisations, thinking they will get the "recommended wage" right out of the gate.

Why do you think SF is a horrible place to live other than the high prices? I briefly lived there and it wasn't so bad.
>>
>>39530168
I planned on making money at it from the start. It can feel monotonous at times, but when you focus on how complex every decision you have to make is, it helps to keep it interesting at a minimum

Def autistic but thats not to say I didn't put in the study time to reach the level I have. I spend a good amount of my free time on poker related shit. WRT only having one talent, I don't think thats the case. As a kid I deep into competitive chess and did fairly well at that also

I used my autism for good and googled before going to college. Fresh out of the 2 year program and making $31/hr. Only a year left and I'll also have my bachelors because I chose useful electives. Every autist picks computers or engineering. Do something Healthcare related and you'll get more money. Getting a masters degree will mean $160k/yr. I hate my job but love my money. But remember, no talkie before coffee.

What should I do if I failed highschool in Australia?

Tried to get a job at a meat packing place and failed. Currently doing pamphlet distribution.

I also do amplifier repair but demand currently far too small to be able to dedicate more than a few hours a week to it.

It's pretty bad. Why even go through some studying some boring subject like accounting if you're just going to end up living in the office and not really enjoying the fruits of your labor? I much rather live at home, work in retail, and be able to spend my money on some fun things than have a respectable job, be moved out, and have no money left over after paying for the basics.

I considered going back to school for accounting (I have a BA in political science), but why bother when it seems like the field is saturated and the wages are low? Why even bother if I'm going to have to grind away until I'm 50 to make any decent money?

What good is money when you're an old fuck and too broken down to enjoy anything anymore? I want to drive the Porsche now. Where's the fun in driving a high performance vehicle when your eye hand coordination and reaction time are shot? How good is fucking some gold digging bitch when you're 50, you've got a fat pot belly, an atrophied ass from sitting all day, and a penis that needs pills to work right? There's probably no point in fucking hot women after you turn 40.

Well, it's a hell of a lot better than most other options, but at least where I go to school, it's anything but theoretical. That stuff does show up more in grad school. Although our CS department sucks ass so SE is just a specialization under CS. It won't matter either way after 4 years of work anyhow.

My uncle is a CPA.

He is doing OK, but he is a pretty Chad, got out of school sometime in the mid to late 90s, and he also has an MBA from a very respectable public university.

His basic bitch wife still divorced him, left him with the kids, and she ran off with some rich dude.

There's no way I'd be able to achieve even half of what he did simply because I am not a Chad.

I could never do medical work. My old man is a doctor, and the hours are shit. I don't think I could ever go to school for that long just to hate my work. Also he does pediatric oncology and meeting the families of some of his patients just made me never want to do that. I don want my PhD though, so whenever he brings up his doctorates in an argument I can throw that shit right back at him

Yes, but barely. Work as an engineering analyst looking at surveying/bathymetry data.

I negotiated a shit salary out of college as I was kind of desperate. I had job offers to go work for other companies as a project engineer (construction), but really didn't want to continue working in that field too much. That was for far more, and I had a lot of experience and contacts (due to working summers as a laborer and later an intern) to pay for school. Never applied for other internships as naively thought if my job application was rejected I'd get thrown on some company blacklist or some shit.

Had no idea what to expect with only a physics bachelors, and I can't really afford or get into a decent grad school. Honestly made more as a laborer with overtime, but I worked far more. Would rather be doing field work though.

I'm a forest manager and GIS Specialist and here in the UK I'm paid 18.75GBP (can't post pound sign) per hour which is apparently equivalent to $24.24. Forest patrol is harder to do than police they're heavily armed and have more power then other agencies because they deal with people with guns
>>
>>39533917
Well I have a BA Hons in Forestry and Conservstion w/ a chainsaw licence (so I can legally fell trees if necessary) plus my driver's license. It is comfy but you have to bear in mind that I'm spending most of my days amongst sitka spruce plantations which are not at all like regular forests. Mostly I'm walking for miles daily through cobwebs and moss and lichen measuring plots. Everyday I come back covered in fauna and if it's been raining, slime.

>>39533955
Nah I don't actually patrol the plots, I help manage the forests and measure their height x volume for eventual sale, and when in the office I arrange contractors and communicate with the shareholders.

In case you haven't checked this is 2017, not 2008. Economy is strongest it's been in a long time. $40k is literally the average. Considering most of us are smart but lazy types we make more than that, we can't stand the thought of being merely average in any way. You basically have to be trying in order to find a job that pays less than that if you've got a non-meme degree.

Not once has anyone made an absurd claim like BS in math $300k starting. All responses sound very believable. NEETs are better off and I do resent my taxes going to them when they already have more free time and a better life than us. You are projecting with your bullshit about conflating salary and selfworth. It doesn't matter how much my job pays, if I didn't need the money I wouldn't do it for even one hour a year. I work for the money and no other reason at all.

Did I strike a nerve? You want to pretend it's the very strong economy's fault you can't find work when they truth is you just suck. Companies everywhere are desperate, even paying sign-on bonuses, student loan payback, and moving assistance. Somehow you still think the economy is to blame. Have you tried applying for positions besides burger flipper and shelf stocker? Even if you don't have skills go sign on with a trucking company, they will pay you to take an 8 week course to get your CDL. If you aren't cut out for getting a degree or drivers license there are still blue collar options. Companies will pay you for on the job training to be a pipefitter, oil-man, deputy, water treatment technician, etc.. Jobs that pay above average are everywhere and the requirements are very low. There are more jobs than there are workers. It's as simple as walking up and accepting one.
