I'd say that while you're young you don't understand how much you grow as a person overtime. Most probably do regret their tattoos and there probably is a short-sighted perspective to it. Some might learn that they don't want to preserve what they thought they wanted to. I just think that the intention isn't as whacky as OP makes it out to be. There are many ways that people seek to immortalize themself (the most popular being through children) and I was pointing out that permanently putting something on your skin is a way to immortalize part of yourself. For example, having an edgy christianity reference is still something that was a part of you, and while you might want to forget about it, I would argue that there is some value in remembering a part of yourself that is abrasing.
