Well, you're right to an extent is the true and boring answer. To a certain degree, never mind how small, every decision we make is based on self-preservation and survival. While that does disqualify all choices from being purely altruistic, it doesn't mean every choice is a completely selfish expression of our ego's desires. It just means we exist and are an active interest in every choice we make.

Those are factors, yes. Donating and helping others is essentially also done out of self-interest because the person doing so is contributing to building up society, which in turn benefits them because it is a wholly better society, even in just a small way. They also may believe they're setting an example, a precedent by which other people may do the same.

Try to think of something which is done solely against self-interest in any fashion.
