A branch of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration researching abrupt climate change have been monitoring a vast deposit of methane, roughly the size of France and equivalent to 250 gigatonnes, stored in the seafloor of the Arctic.
They have been observing for years the gradual warming of the climate and the sea ice receding. They know that when the sea ice is gone, the methane will be released from its frozen cage of water molecules and rise through the sea into the atmosphere.
Their data-processing software fed by thousands of sensors and satellites predicts that at current warming, the sea-ice will be gone in 10 years.
It will take the methane roughly 5 years to circulate around the globe and incorporate into the atmosphere, after which temperatures would rise rapidly by 7C-10C, killing all plant life.

Is this information disclosed to the wider public? or is it kept a secret?

Interesting stuff. You have a source on this bad boy?

It's not a secret, methane hydrates have been known about for years, Japan actually developed technology to try and harvest it off the sea floor, in America the Gulf of Mexico has massive reserves of it, but its kind of terrifying. It's flammable ice and once it starts to melt it would basically catastrophically go pretty quickly.

Purely fictional, made this up walking home, inspired by some alarmist climatologists

and a general feeling that our infant species will too soon exceed the capacities of our mother earth

good idea for a movie imo
