Anybody here with the Merchant Marine?
How do I make it in? What's it like?
might as well become a navy boatswains mate or get a janitor job. Merchant marine is garbage unless youre an officer.
Better off joining the Navy even if youre a brainlet. If youre smart, you can pick up a good electronics or crypto job, advance faster, and be much better off and cozier.
Take the full asvab and see how you do. Army GT score minus like 15 or 20 is your real IQ. test is half general knowledge, hald pattern matching IQ test.

>calls MM garbage
>suggests navy
Sure, if you want to make 1/5th of the money and be treated like a child all the time.
OP, get your TWIC first and then apply for your MMC, after that join a union. All info can be found on the USCG national maritime center website.

merchant marine sounds too much like EVE irl.I don't want to get podded by Somali pirates.

Pirates only hit ships run by third worlders because they're too poor to protect themselves.

I was a boatswain's mate and I totally disagree. The Merchant Mariners do less work and make more money. Also, doing unrep on a Saturday or Sunday is big ass overtime pay. I don't remember getting over time pay in the military.

This guy knows his shit.
From what I heard about the Merchant Mariners is what I've only been told by my 2nd class who was an MA before he converted to a BM and other BM's. My 2nd class said his first TAD as an MA besides Iraq was being onboard a TOA USNS. He said all employees had state rooms with each room to two people. No GQ's, no racks, food was passionately cook with the secret ingredients of tender love nd care, if you had watch you didn't participate in unrep, and a lot of down time, but still a lot of work in civilian standards.

Pretty much what this guy said. Each person gets their own room. Watchstanders can be made to help with unreps if they are needed but anything outside 8 hours a day is overtime and any work on weekends/holidays is overtime. A lot of people work long days by choice actually as there is little else to do out here and overtime adds up to a lot. Many people make more in overtime then they do base pay.
