Can we get a /uni/ thread going? Last year I was a senior in hs. Now I'm one week into uni and already feel like dropping out/transferring to local college. Don't understand anything in math and prof talks like a mouse, chem lectures are hard to follow, and have a lit assignment due tomorrow that makes no fucking sense whatsoever. I can't do this for one semester let alone 4 fucking years.

Oh boy, another year of not making any friends, not talking to any girls, not losing my virginity and watching my GPA slip

>>
>>39376818
it's as easy as saying hello to the person next to you.
>Hey how's it goin?
>My names ___ whats you name?
>good to meet you.
>Where are you from?
>talk about where they're from if you know it or if it's from far away
>what year are you?
>what is your major?
>why is it that?
>why did you take this class?
etc
first weeks of college are the easiest fucking conversations you will ever have. But you have to act fast. Make a connection early and try to solidify it by sitting next to them and continuing to talk as the weeks go by. They won't all stick, even fewer will actually become friends.
But you don't want to be /that guy/ who doesn't talk to anyone.

How do I ask for contact info from a friend? My autism has gotten in the way many times and prevented me from asking in the past. I also have absolutely no social media so it's slightly harder.
>>
>>39377270
Midway through conversation, at a natural break in topics ask "hey, can I have your number?"
>>
>>39377270
If you have a purpose for that just straight up ask:
"hey can i have your contact? I gotta do xxx"
If you don't just go up to them and, after some smoothening talk about whatever "hey, can i add you on goybook? You're really cool or something"
>>
>>39377270
>>39377356

Just graduated from community college. The entire time I was there I had no friends and talked to no one. The closest I've ever had to a friend was this one guy this last semester that was in the computer lab while I waited between classes for the next one to start. My first yr I got bad grades and financial aid got taken away. The first year was the hardest i didnt have anyone to talk to and depression hit hard i gained weight and got stretch marks. Im trying to lose weight now. Im poor and my mom had to pay out of pocket. I feel like such a huge let down. Now that im out i have no idea what i wanna do for the rest of my life. I would rather be in community college cause atleast i had something to do. Which is ironic cause when I was in there I fucking hated it.
>>
>>39377478
Unless he's a true autist and/or smells really fucking bad, people will be receptive. People love it when you make an effort to be their friend. They may not reciprocate your efforts but that's another matter entirely.

Starting my third year on a BA History course in a month. Not only have I become disilluded with the subject and realised how counterproductive uni has been for me both socially and mentally, but the thought of doing a dissertation is making me physically sick. I've been researching crap for it for the past few months but I feel no more ready for it.

21k in student loans spent on making myself an unemployable sperg manchild... I wish I had some sort of talent or hobby as a kid that I could have built a future around.

I hate this fucking place so much, I'm going for a meme degree so that I can go work a meme job I don't even want, and I'm not even getting out this year I have one more left, I just want to sit in and watch anime and not deal with people and classes I think the only reason that I've managed to make it this long is because literally the only thing I look forward to anymore is anime and my unis fgc weeklys, if I hadn't found those I likely would've just dropped out and killed myself by now

Does anyone know how to compare UK and US grades?

The UK uses a percentage based system but the US uses GPA.
I finished first year with 77% overall, which is a 1st class grade in the UK but 77% would be a shit in the US as far as I know.
>>
>>39384146
uk uses grades 1:1 being the best 1:2 being acceptable and anything less being a waste of 4 years
>>
>>39384146
US grades work like this usually:
A = 4.0 = 90%+
B = 3.0 = 80-89%
C = 2.0 = 70-79%
D = 1.0 = 60-69%
F = 0 = 59% and below
>>
>>39384053
Older dorms are shared rooms, most I think just share a bathroom and communal space with private rooms.
>>
>>39384167
I know, it's a very dumb and old system. Also it's 2:1.

>>39384168
But it wouldn't be fair to say I have a GPA between 2 and 3 just because the US has easier tests allowing for higher grades. See what I mean?

I mean is a 70% in the UK comparable to 85% in the US? I wish there was an official conversion table for this sort of thing.

Pretty much every UK student takes student loans from a government-based loans company thing, since you don't start paying them until you make a certain amount of money a year. Since I'll never be making much money I'll just be sitting on that debt for the rest of my life, vast majority of undergrads do that. That's what I've always been told at least.

>He was pretty cool about it, but told me it was his duty to tell the administration because I was technically trespassing.

Well that sounds like a pain in the ass since UK unis don't have "classes" as such. We have a set of modules that are unique to each university.

I wish the UK had a more standardised, universal system like the US.

What I'm saying is the privileged kids who can actually afford to go to uni are all hedonistic morons because they've been handed everything, including a bank of information from the internet meaning nobody needs to have even a passing interest in learning to succeed; everything is online. Nowadays, Uni is just something used to waste time and extort money from ignorant kids who don't even have it yet. 50 years ago there were other options than going to uni, which meant only people actually interested in learning attended. You can thank Thatcher for opening the floodgates by stopping kids straight out of school from finding work.

OP get out while you can. Uni is a meme.

Trust me, I've been there for almost years and I've got 3 degrees, none of them is useful or even recognized outside of this country. Biggest mistake of my life.

Go find a good job or some dual study/apprenticeship kind of deal instead and earn money. If you keep this up for the same amount of time I spent at uni, you'll have a ton of savings and can start looking for a sweet ass house, while I am broke and have literally no experience, nor anything worthwhile to propose in the job market.

I see people suffering all the time at uni because they have a certain flaw like being a short guy or being a single mom and being talked about behind their backs by the privileged, even having their photos taken and laughed at. My point is uni shouldn't be another popularity contest. It should be a place to learn and develop your knowledge, but instead it's been overtaken by normies with no interest in actually learning meaning it serves no purpose now except to extort money and waste time.

You don't have to take part in the popularity contest if you don't want to. You can treat uni as a place to learn and study even if many people don't.

>it's been overtaken by normies with no interest in actually learning meaning it serves no purpose now except to extort money and waste time.

learn some history m8 that is all uni has been since the dawn of uni except now it's been feasible for normal people to get in. Meaning you actually have to work to stand out and don't just get to walk into a job for turning up some of the time.
>>
>>39385586
I'm not referring to my personal case though. I'm making a point about uni in general. Just me studying hard has very little chance in developing the world, but if there were more people at uni with interest in learning there would be a higher chance of development. The people who want to learn though are being mistreated by the normie crowd leading to isolation and depression in a lot of cases.

Yes, be yourself.
You are not capable of acting out the role of someone else. If you try to, you will fail, probably embarass yourself and make you hate yourself even more.
Be yourself, get through the shit and preferably put in some effort to socialization and getting to know those around you.

Cheers, congrats on getting in, too! Coincidentally, Warwick was my insurance choice if Lancaster had rejected me. The only thing I probably don't like about Warwick would be the long arse commuting. Managed to nail a comfy spot in Lancaster, walk to class is like 3 minutes maximum, hope the professors are friendly.

Don't worry Anon.

On my orientation there was this really cute grill who got along well with me. She even wanted to sit beside me and smiled a lot when we talked. The first time in my life a grill was so empathetic towards me. Her name was Anna and I remember her blonde hair, her brown eyes and her goofy smile from my jokes. I was too much of a cowardly sperg back then to exchange numbers or anything, but she gave me a small metal pin from her work place at the time and said I should visit her there sometime.

I never went there. I hoped every semester that maybe our paths would cross again, somewhere on that huge campus, but I never saw her again. I will finally graduate in the coming winter after all these years.

I still have that pin in my book shelf.... thank you Anna. <3

In my country there's a day where they round up "freshers" to explain them the gist of uni. Will I have to step up and talk about myself?
My questioon was the same for the dorms
>>
Germanon here, if thats relevant.
So, two questions: First, I am going to study political science for my BA, with a minor in psychology. Is it as bad as the memes say, or can I work with it? Also, I will probaly commute to Uni for the first year or so, way is about 60 minutes, is that a bad idea?
>>
>>39388766
I'm not American, so take that as you will.

>will there be introduction classes during prep freshman?
You will most likely have introduction classes in a sense that they'll give you a first little dip in the water of your chosen field. To learn the basics and to get an outlook of what's in front of you. But no, there will be no chair circle therapy session where you introduce yourselves to each other like in kindergarten.

>can I avoid all the dorm social bullshit
There is no social bullshit. Forget all the stuff you see on American college movies. Most people won't even notice a new face. It's more like a hotel atmosphere where everyone minds their own business. Of course you may make friends along the road if you happen to cross paths with someone you dig, but that's not a necessity. My friend lived there for 5 years and has never even spoken to anyone on a non-casual level.
>>
>>39389042
I'm not sure about campus life in germany but commuting is probably a bad idea, you'll miss out on a lot of student life and have more trouble making friends. As for degrees nothing is really a meme degree if you get an internship/experience. Notice how often people with easily employable degrees post here reeeing about how shit their degree is and they can't find jobs, every time it's because they didn't get internships or work experience. As long as you have good grades AND experience or did an internship you'll make it into a job no matter the degree.

>>
>>39388766
>>will there be introduction classes during prep freshman?
Depends on the professor some jump straight in with work but most will spend the first day going over the syllabus, you'll probably only have to do self introduction if it's a smaller class or one with a lot of group work.

>>can I avoid all the dorm social bullshit
probably, will also depend on your school/dorm, for reference I stayed in a single room first year so I didn't even have a room mate so aside from once a month quick group meeting which just consisted of a RA reading off the dorm rules and passing around a check in sheet, no other activities were mandatory, but if you have a room mate you'll have to deal with him and any friends/gfs he brings
>>
>>39389042
Fellow germanfag here. I commute daily for 45 to 60 minutes with bus and s-bahn. It's not the best, but far from bad. You'll manage. Just make sure to eat a good breakfast and perhaps use the time in the train to read. A lot of people commute this long.

>>

For 99% of /r9k/ stem is a meme, they're going to fail out of CS and either drop out or end up in another major anyway, and of the few that stick with it you'll see them back here in a few months complaining they can't find a job because they did absolutely nothing outside of their class work, did no internships and made no connections. Anon, you're not hitting up the club or going to a bar, looks don't matter, most of freshers is to do with walking around a room and getting to know people, it's not difficult.

If you ever get nervous, just remember that everyone else is in the same position as you: they're in an unfamiliar place surrounded by people who they've never met before - it's perfectly ok to be worried! Just don't let that stop you from making friends. These are people who you will know for all of your time in uni - or heck, even for the rest of your life. That's something to embrace and look forward to, in my opinion.

I still find it rather amusing that in America, where land should be so cheap and easy to obtain, that people have to share a room together. In the UK you get a room for yourself and sharing a room is rather rare, it's even illegal in some cases as we have a lot of laws about the maximum number of tenants a house can 'hold'.

How much do you guys normally pay for just a room in the US? Do you get options for cheaper or more expensive housing within the university?

Most if not all colleges, even if you are not a freshman, have events and mandatory/compulsory things for freshman/first years. Can't get out of it. Dorms are a choice if you can get to the college. If you don't live close enough, and the financial aid covers it, get a dorm.

I'd understand a fear of taking a test, or giving an oral report, but writing an essay? You write it, you hand it in, you get grade back. What fuels your fear, Anon?

Also, due to there being a lot more women than men in college, I hope women know their expectations are too high to find a man with a college degree to marry. GED/High School Diploma should be enough.

most of them aren't majoring in STEM tho. When I take my "concentration" classes there are only like 2 or 3 girls. But in general classes like English there are wayyy more women than men. it is kinda surprising to see women being the majority in College though, like, you'd think it would be men that feel the pressure of going to College/Uni to study for their future career to be a good provider. but I also think it has to do with women not wanting to be dependent on men 100% financially

most uni staff don't give a fuck. i remember turning up late to my introduction meeting with my tutor because i was hungover and slept in but it's not like high school, they'd rather you not be there so they can do nothing tbf. so don't worry too much about shit like tutorials.

Here's a piece of advice all the high school kids need to hear:

> As soon as you enter university, the teacher is no longer an authority figure: They are an employee. And you are a customer. Your class brings the school tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars. The teacher costs them money.

If a teacher is quiet, tell them to speak up. Don't ask, tell. If you don't understand, tell the teacher to explain it to the class. Go to their office hours to get extra help. TELL THEM WHAT TO DO LIKE ANY RETAIL WORKER.

Don't worry about being marked down. 99% of teachers have a TA who does the marking who won't know your name. And if you ever get unfair marks you go to the ombudsman and grief it. YOU have more power than the teacher does.

Welcome to post secondary.
>>
>>39398976
>being a dick to professors
>being a dick to retail workers
cringe
>>
>>39399067
He didn't say be a dick, he said tell them what to do. Which is what you should do when you're a customer, because you are paying for something and you should get it.

I had a teacher say he was cancelling class early once and I asked him if I was getting a refund for the two hours of education I wasn't getting. He was pretty stunned. It had never occurred to him that as someone paying hundreds of dollars for a class I'd want my fucking money's worth.
>>
>>39399101
>don't ask tell
>don't worry about being marked down

I don't wanna get into a big thing about this and semantics cause I gotta get to bed, but these are the red flags that are basically him saying "you can be a dick".
Be kind to your professors. Be kind to employees.

Also, the logic at getting upset with your professor and even demanding a refund from him is as pants on head retarded as chewing out a lowly retail employee for making an honest mistake or corporate fuckery.

Does the message stand on its own? Yeah. You should make the most of the thousands of dollars you're spending and take advantage of the many opportunities given to you.
But does that excuse going on an ego power trip and being unkind to your professors? Of course not. Use your head. Be a good student and be a good person.

Upset over getting financially fucked by the university? Come on, either get used to it or go protest/call a senator/march to congress about it. You knew what you were getting into.

It's my second week of uni and I realized I fucking hate my roomate. She calls with her boyfriend every night for about 3-4 hours. I didnt realize I'd get a 3rd fucking roomate when I signed up to be hers. She's always shouting into the mic too when she talks to him.
I bought a mechanical keyboard an now she flames me for typing to loudly, ironic huh

They need to compensate somehow. He needs to prove he knows something about a subject because otherwise he feels like he and his time researching it are worth nothing.

Wow. Higher ranked universities are such a scam. I transferred to a flagship ""research"" university thinking that I'd be able to actually fucking research.
>have to email 20+ professors before you get a 'maybe'
>half of them don't respond
>have to fill out a fucking research application which will probably get thrown out
>GPA is required on application to be a FREE lab slave
>credit isn't even guaranteed (not like I've ever gotten it anyway)
>information on research isn't even updated constantly
At my old college, research pages were updated consistently, you didn't need a fucking application, and you'd get accepted with your first email.
On top of all of this, I wasn't able to get a dorm on campus because they overloaded them with piece of shit freshman, so now I have to take two buses to get to and from campus. It took me nearly 2 hours to get back today. Nearly every professor here is a genius, so all of the STEM classes are MUCH more fucking difficult, yet the english class I was forced to retake still requires GROUPWORK. MY PROFESSOR PUT ME IN A GROUP OF FUCKING FRESHMAN FEMALES. FUUUCK THIS.

So financial aid apparently chose me randomly for "secondary confirmation" and needs me to mail something in and, when received, it will take a few business days to process. They just told me this and classes start Monday. Without this confirmation I get no financial aid and it won't be in time for class so I literally called them and they said "You won't get financial aid for your first term, you'll have to wait to start college until the next term late October. There goes two months of my life that I'll just be waiting because of this random bullshit I was "lucky" enough to get chosen to have to deal with

How HOW do I stop being a lonely faggot and actually get it with a female?

I talk to numerous females on a daily basis and I never know how to get past the next step. Are there really noticeable signs that women have that indicate that they like you? I'd ask them out but I'd rather be spared the embarrassment of being denied especially if I was too socially retarded to see that they were never interested in the first place.

Why must this be so difficult bros

I don't know man, in high school it was so simple, shit is getting complicated everyday. Fucking romantic movies and internet have made it so hard by increasing women's expectations. I wish it was simple as saying 'i like you would you like to mate with me?' Or 'i wanna fuck you girl, let me dip my noodle in that wet puddle'
