Please dont waste your time with art school, you can so easily teach yourself without having to finish 20 sketches in a week and having stress and anxiety. You have so many tutorials, tips and tricks, references and more to help you learn to draw/paint. Not to mention art school is expensive and more so you wont have food to eat if you go to art school. Go to a better school, and be self thought.

If you go to a meme art school like FullSail, and the art schools that advertise on television, or if you are trying to pass off vidya game design as art, you have no chance and are better off wasting your money on a humanities degree from a half decent state school

I am going to university for graphic design starting on monday. Being in debt or whatever isn't really going to be a problem for me, so is it going to be worth it? A lot of people talk shit about art-related degrees and say they're not worth it. I feel like art is the only thing I'm even decent at in life though.

Dude don't draw anime characters if you want to get good at art. I wasted so much time drawing anime (and I got good at that) but it isn't useful at all and wont actually make you good at drawing. Ever since I stopped drawing faggot anime pictures I got so much better at drawing and painting.

How old are you OP? You might be able to take classes for free through scholarships and grants. Fill out a fafsa and apply to a college or community college. My college gives me $8000/yr for example.

I'm going to preface this response by saying I don't know what I'm doing on 4chan. I don't like anime. I don't like tech. I don't like video games. Chances are you and I have much different personalities, and like much different things. So when you say "art" what does that mean? Are you drawing pictures of knights and cartoon characters on your folders, or are you talking about being an artist like Jeff Koons or Ai Weiwei?

With that said, I am a filmmaker and yes, I went to film school. No degree is useless. You could make 75K a year talking about softball if you wanted. What devalues these degrees are the people who get them thinking they're easy degrees, because lets face it, it is an easy degree to get. All that matters is your passion, dedication, and work ethic.

School isn't necessary for anything. But, it does offer a few things that might make it worth it in my experience.

You will be exposed to a broad range of subjects which will expand your understanding of society and how the world operates. This will make you more knowledgeable and more empathetic.

>networking
Similar to exposure, but you will have the opportunity to interact with other creative types. And if you get in with the right group, the talented group, the students who stand out, you will create a community of creators who inspire and build each other up. Also, you get the opportunity to network with instructors who probably have access to the art world in ways you do not.

>experience
While you will be paying to go to school, you will get guided opportunities to build and create things to expand your portfolio. If you fuck up, you will get guidance. This isn't possible when you are creating by yourself. You don't get feedback from people who know what they're talking about, and you won't progress the same way. This will also let you build a body of work.

To expand. The only reason I am successful in this is because I am autistically obsessed with this stuff.

I can talk about frame rates, aperture, bokeh, shutterspeed, all that technical stuff for hours. It is my life. I work in the field, then come home and watch YouTube videos about the work I spent the whole day doing. It is my life, and I would die for this.

How do you know if college isn't for you?

If you're doing this for an easy degree. If you have awful work ethic. If you already know people in the art community i.e. your parents are artists, and you can sort of inherit the family business.

You can make a KILLING in graphic design. If you network, work your ass off, and are a likable person. Graphic design is everywhere. Look around your room, everything has some type of design element. Even the typeface on your computers logo was made by a designer. Design and marketing is everything.

I didn't 'start' drawing non-anime. I always drew in various styles but I started drawing anime from middle school all the way to high school. My art teacher inspired me to start drawing normal humans instead of dumb cartoons. I like drawing surreal things.
