>did an art degree
don't do this
I've destroyed my life irreversibly. I graduated almost 4 years ago and I'm still looking for a job.
don't fuck up like I did do NOT trick yourself into believing there is a light at the end of the tunnel for art majors
>>
Does graphic design count as an art degree?
>>
>>39321805

How much debt do you have?

What are art major girls like?
>>
>>39321805
yeah, art is pretty much the most useless thing on earth
that's what makes art, art: utility futility
"priceless" masterpieces are actually priceless. worth nothing, you know.
the high priced auctions are the bullshit past-time of richfags conspicuously consuming
they love throwing money at the destitute artists insofar as it makes for an appearance of giving half a care to the enslummed classes
bit of false hope here and there
and wow lady cumbersnatch has 5 picassos what a dame so much more refined than sir peckerwood's measly 2
please ignore this post it's just rambling
>>
>>39321863
Yes
>>39321874
like 12k, it's funny money though I don't owe anything til I get a job that pays over 20k, which I never will
Art major girls are okay but not worth ruining your life over
>>
You know there are high paying jobs available that don't rely on your degree, such as construction, oil, mining...
At worst you put yourself in some debt.
>>
>>39321805
Our society is in constant demand of something that we already produce in abundance.
>>
>>39321918
All of which require years of experience. Trust me I have tried for 4 years to look for ANY job and all I've managed to find is shitty retail stuff
>>
>>39321805
>did an art degree
I would laugh at you, but you may have gotten that your life is a joke by now. What where you thinking, holy shit.
>>
>>39321918
>construction
You can get the lowest job at construction but it's deadend job if you dont have qualifications. Besides it really fucks up with your health.
>>
>>39321805
It's not the degree's fault. It's your fault for not being good enough. If only the top 1% were getting jobs, it was up to you to be in that top 1% but you just didn't push yourself hard enough.
>>
If you don't owe anything back (unless you bag yourself a good job), then how have you destroyed your life? You may have missed an opportunity but you wanted to learn about art and you got it.
>>
>>39321943
Nope. Go where there is demand and you will find a job. Go to a mining town and you will be making 6 figures within a couple years operating equipment, free accommodations, and sometimes even get flown in and out for shifts.
>>39321966
That's why you transition into a trade or equipment operation.
>>
>>39321995
Because I'm now in my late 20s with financial obligations and no skills, I can't go back to university because I can't afford to and can't change my career because I have no skills
>>39321985
Don't believe this lie, you have to have connections to get these jobs not skills. I know several people in the jobs that I want and I can say without biased that I'm more skilled than them, but it's who they knew that got them their positions and they have admitted that
>>39321946
I was a stupid 16 year old with no parents to talk sense into me
>>
>>39321890
Great, I'm not good at anything else really besides arts, writing,Computer stuff and that's about it. What do I do
>>
>>39322062
Go into at computer science at uni and do an internship while there
>>
>>39322040
>I was a stupid 16 year old with no parents to talk sense into me
One question remains. Are you parents dead or just cunts?
>>
>>39322040
Part of having a real art career is networking, you jackass. You should admit that you blew it. Being a good artist but failing to be recognized for it is your problem, not everyone else's.
You just may not have been cut out to have a career in doing something creative. So be a salaryman. Start stocking shelves with Tyrone at Wal-Mart, or pouring coffee for snobby white girls at Starbucks. And know you're there because you failed.
>>
>>39322133
they're dead and I was neglected by my legal guardian permanently, I didn't see them at all and lived alone in a derelict house so basically I've had no guidance from the age of 12
>>
>>39322172
can you tell me a bit more about your successful art career?
>>
>>39322184
Sounds like you hard a shitty childhood. I know it's not worth much, but I'd hire you. You aren't as bitchy as most of this board seems to be.
>>
>>39322211
thanks, I appreciate it
I wish being a good person could get me a fulfilling job though
>>
>>39322232
Isn't going for an apprenticeship worth a shot? That might get you into the trades. Not the job many people want to do, but you may have barred youself from the white collar route by now.
>>
>>39322184
Tf is this Charles Dickens shit damn niqqa
>>
>>39322263
I've considered it and weighed it up but I'm really not in the kind of position where I can afford to be on an apprenticeship wage
>>39322274
it's a lot worse than what's in that post but that's a story for a different time
>>
>gets an art degree
>thinks that's enough
>doesnt git gud
Don't blame the industry, blame yourself for not making good enough art. It's really not that hard to find work.
>>
>>39322313
>I'm really not in the kind of position where I can afford to be on an apprenticeship wage
What kind of wage are you on right now? I mean, you have to earn some money, I assume.
>>
>>39322337
minimum wage, it's just enough to cover my expenses and i'm budgeting carefully
>>
>>39322356
1st year Apprentices make much more than than minimum wage.
>>
>>39321805
I took a 3D animation degree and now work in the vfx industry, that is the only thing that keeps me from killing myself. Basically if you like art go for it but be aware of the risks and be sure to be 100% dedicated to it or else you will fail like OP

Don't know what your minimum wage is, but those wages ain't so bad.

This. I can't count the amount of times people complained about starving artists when they don't even put a tenth of the work required. VFX/Game industry is comfy af if you can break in.

unfortunately I agree with you, anon.
I have a story

>Knew this girl a long time ago, let's call her Jane
>19 y/o, pretty cute
>Wasn't in college
>Crazy talker. Yapyapyapyap. Literally never took a breath.
>Every time she met a new person she'd keep them by engaging them in endless conversation
>Seen her do this with EVERYBODY. I have witnessed her doing it to a robot with autism. She just rambles even tho he's answering in short sentences.
>She painted on the side
>Her paintings were FUCKING. AWFUL.
>Ok that's a little harsh but legit they were not worth purchasing. On a scale of 1-10 her paintings were a 3.
>She told me she'd made 400 bucks off of one of her AWFUL paintings
>Tells me she goes to [some public outside destination] with her pieces and gear and flaps her gums to whoever shows her interest
>People eat her up, some even get something and request ANOTHER commission
>She makes bank
>All because she's charismatic (I guess? It depends on how much manic behavior you can endure)

Sorry OP. You've got to put yourself out there to be a successful artist.

My advice to younger anons on the cusp of adulthood (especially millennials) is to dramatically lower your expectations and focus on modest achievable goals.

There's no point beating yourself up chasing a dream you'll never reach.
>>
History degree here. Had a job for 3 years, got fired, it was a shitty IT call center gig.

There's no hope.
>>
>>39321805
I always thought art majors were in it for the pussy/were going to work at daddy's shop after they graduate anyway and their parents are paying for their schooling. Sorry you're still looking for a job though. I on the other hand went STEM because I bought into the meme and thought having a job and a high salary would make me happy. Turns out it doesn't, and my college experience was terrible by comparison to psychology and other liberal arts majors.
>>
>>39322172
>to succeed at art, you must be a great at marketing

burn it down
>>
>business major
>same shit

college is a scam
>>
>>39321805
Honestly, I feel like most people in art majors fail because they think the program will fast track them into a career with little to no extra curricular effort. Like, seriously, an Art Major, who has to spend hours of time outside of class researching, drawing, planning, and synthesizing ideas in order to attempt to create a visually successful piece, and you can't understand that you have to be able to network, you have to be able to empathize with others, you have to be able to market yourself. An artist is a BRAND and your work is a PRODUCT. How are you going to sell shit if you can't market yourself?

I'm going to school for a Bachelors in Fine Arts, and I want to get into Art Therapy master program after I graduate. Yeah, it's scary, but even I know I'm not going to be able to subsist off making works, at least not right away. Be USEFUL with your work as well as being aesthetically valuable, and you will always have a job.

Also anon, you can teach english as a foreign language in a lot of countries just having a 4 year degree, regardless of what it is. You are probably a native english speaker, am I right?

It's like 1200 bucks for the teaching certification and some time. Many of these countries will house you, pay you, fly you in, so you can teach english.

so tired of this fatalistic garbage on R9k, most of you dont even try to improve your life and just whail gloom and doom at the first sign of adversity. Look at OP, crying on r9k about his troubles instead of trying to paint it out.

i dont mean to be harsh man but seriously sort yourself out.

the thing about art school is it's an orgy. if you really had motivation and talent you wouldn't need anyone pushing you & telling you what to do. It's all a bunch of tools copying from each other what they copped from books & magazines, so what we end up with is this
t.artist(non-school fool)
>>
>>39321805
you did what you wanted to. dont beat yourself up about it. im not gonna tell you life doesnt suck cuz it does. but considering youve actually ever done anything youll probably be okay.
>>
it doesn't take a group to create great art, it takes an individual who works REALLY hard
>>
>>39321805
This is why I will always be an uncredited philosopher and nobody will ever take me seriously and I'll never speak to anyone that would ever have the sense to not listen to me
>>
>>39322793
what if my goal is to never work?
is that achievable?
>>

i'd pay a lot of money for good porn
>>
>>39321805
why not just draw furry porn? the market is there and plenty of ppl keep themselves afloat like that.

I'm going to do a graphic design degree (starting university this monday) and I don't think I'm going to have any debt or anything. Is it worth it then? I'm not really good at anything else and I got a lot of money for scholarships and family that will pay for me.

Yes but It's actually of value as long as the college for film you're going to is particularly presitge, if not It's just another 100k scam.

Planning on going to college soon and was likely going into either business (likely marketing) or a history degree. My reasoning for the latter is that I'm great at history and English. Am I fugged?
>>
>>39324925
You should do a double major or just the business degree/
