A common misconception (from both sides -- weirdly enough).

An introvert is a person who lacks sociability, or a social life, in some way. That's pretty much all it is. It can be because of social skills, it can have nothing to do with them period. It can be because of a disability or mental illness. It can be because socialising drains them of energy more than other people. Or it can simply be none of those, and because they're simply not interested in socialising (which seems to be the most common case). People often treat introversion like it's a personality or disorder (like there's only one type of introversion), when really it's a character trait or symptom.
