I actually paid for one but there were lots of other servers being posted all the time that I felt it was a wasted effort. I wouldn't mind doing it again though.

This. You should probably get Optifine if you have trouble. Considering you run the game at 10 fps on lowest default settings you should get Optifine. Its easy to install. Literally launch the downloaded file and press install in your directory which will be automatically selected for you. After that choose the fastest settings. Minecraft on highest settings doesn't even look that good and on lowest in optifine you might get around 50 fps. Survival mode is comfy
