But rude, yes. Liberals by definition are against the status quo and hence tend to be more negative and critical of the world around them. And also they tend to be young.

People who are really absorbed in contemporary politics seem to always be assholes regardless of their positions, especially online.

Because leftists tend to suffer from deeply ingrained feelings of inferiority, to the extent that they cannot conceive of themselves as individually strong and valuable. They can feel strong only as a member of a large organization or a mass movement with which they identify themselves. As such, when you criticize their politics or even let them know that you don't agree with them completely, it's impossible for them to take it as anything but a personal attack.
