Out of three PCI-E wi-fi cards I own, I can't make a single one work with pfSense, despite all of them being Atheros chipsets, which ostensibly work. Even though my parents and not me are the ones who make most of the use of wi-fi here I don't like having that ancient Asus router sitting around in access-point mode. It's taking up space and I don't trust it, the damn thing is running a 2.4 series kernel. I'm thinking of sticking one of the wi-fi cards in my home server, since Linux ought to support it better than FreeBSD, and just running hostapd on my own. But I'd have to get off my ass and update it to Debian 9, and remake all my VMs since Virtualbox got dropped from Stretch because Oracle is full of dickweeds. But even then I'd only be using it for my stuff because unless I want to enable IP forwarding and fight with the swamp that is iptables I'd have to just bridge the AP onto my server's normal network connection. Wireless is such a bother.
