This is parody, of course. Unfortunately, I've seen men proclaim the same sentiment seriously, with a grim mien rather than a playful smirk. They truly believe there's virtue to be found in the wizard's lodge, a moment of poetry beautiful enough to justify a lifelong elegy.

Well, I'll address the men a clown has decided to serve as mouthpiece for because, tragically enough, they exist.

Whenever I see anyone aspire to the wizard's life, I'm reminded of the scene from Svankmajer's "Faust" in which the eponymous mage conjures Mephisto:

We have our aspiring magician with his grimoire in hand, eager to commend himself to Hell. Both God and Nature intervene, employing all of their tricks, every terror and pleasure at their disposal, to knock him from his magical circle back into the world of men. Mephisto appears before the apprentice; God couldn't dissuade the sorcerer from Hell, but perhaps the Devil can. The demon tells Faustus exactly what awaits him if he signs the pact; miraculously, the Lord of Lies honestly describes the misery of the damned. Deluded, Faust refuses to believe testimony regarding the agonies of Gehenna offered by something that has burned in it since the world was born.

Faustus didn't die with the prayers of the enlightened upon his lips but, rather, the howls of the damned. Hell has mysteries to teach but not a single one of them is lovely.

If you were fortunate enough to have been born a man rather than an abomination, Nature has blessed you. Any demon would confess that to you, just as Mephisto once did to a bitter old professor. Don't sacrifice that amazing bit of fortune, something every citizen of Pandemonium envies, for the privilege of living and dying like a monster.
